Was a BMW estate I think.

    Thanks

Sounds like traffic. Were they wearing their white hat?
  • I'm still waiting for a police officer to ask me if I hold a UK driving licence, like they do on TV - just so I can say "no, I hold a GB driving licence". Would that get me arrested?

Last time I went to a police station, they brought up some sort of 'file' on me and while it was only an abstract description of me (name, age, address) under occupation it had 'Software Engineer'. It doesn't take much effort to find out. I'm pretty sure one of the questions on the census was job wasn't it?

They knew my bil was uk forces and blue light trained...

No, they'd probably just call you a boring b**tard and tell you to do one

Probably not - but they can hold you back for an hour or so by wasting your time.

To most cops that would just be appearing to be a 'smart *ss' even if you are correct. They wont thank you for pointing out their error.

I've stopped trying to educate or correct people - especially those who can give me a load of hassle.

There are times that you just have to not be pedantic and let folks prattle on about Czechoslovakia and Jugoslavia as if they actually still existed, for example.

My pet hate is the Customs folks in Dover who insist on asking me where I've come from, when I get off a ferry from Calais.

I travel a lot in Europe and I just accept folks talking about English money, English passports and even English embassies.
  • I would have asked him how he caught up with me.

Sounds like one to me - real policemen use discretion because a gentle warning (if the circumstances are appropriate) can be far more effective than leaving another disillusioned person out there.

    This.

I was once stopped on the M18 (Christmas Day morning, baby in the back, trying to get the 100 miles to parents for Xmas dinner, late already) by a traffic plod. He told me verbally that he had followed me for a stretch at 80+, and gave the car a good look-over. I was polite and respectful throughout. He kept me for about 10 minutes, then nodded towards the back seat and said "with a cargo like that, I'd be taking it a bit steady", smiled, and drove off.

Very effective policing - it slowed me down for quite a while. I appreciated the human touch and the discretion involved. Gatsos and scamera vans only get people negative and angry, no matter how 'fair' they are.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.
