How would the forum software know what was browsed from a browser that wasn't logged in? Public ip addresses cannot be assumed to uniquely identify a device.

Hmmmm ... cookies storing User ID perhaps?

    Mac addresses can
Only available on the same local network.

The OP is either somehow mistaken - ie still logged in or if not logged in the "stalker" has some other way of knowing what was being done.

Cookies set in one browser won't be visible to a website browsed to from a different browser on the same machine.

Technically MAC addresses only need to be unique on the local network so they don't really uniquely identify a machine, but in any case Ethernet frames aren't transmitted across the internet so the forum software won't know MAC addresses of its users.

It's not all about cookies - your browser has fingerprints. The version of flash you have installed, any BHO's, OS version etc are all sent as a part of the request header - that means even without cookies, your browser tells the site more about you than you already know, and your particular configuration may be largely unique.

Plus IP address is likely to be consistent unless you deliberately drop the DHCP lease *and* pick up a new lease on a different IP.
