The only yellow I can see is a yellow ? at the side of "Other devices" a drop down list then gives me another yellow ? with a ! on it, "Multimedia Audio Controller", but I am not having any problems with audio.
I have typed sfc /scannow into run, (can't do anything with cmd, it is going through the Windows File Protection sequence, slowly.
I need to go out in 10 minutes so will post back later.

OK the Windows File Protection has done what it should have done? Not sure as it finished whilst I was out, can't find any details of what it did or didn't find, but VLC will still not play the videos!
I do not think it is worthwhile trying to sort something out on my computer as the videos play OK on the other media, so it suggests something wrong with VLC?Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
If you reinstall the drivers which have become corrupt you may find VLC may work.0

Erm ... right-click on the item in Device Manager and select Update Driver?
Or download the drivers from the manufacturer's site and run their install utility?0 -

OK can find nothing in device manager re VLC.
Been to website and can find nothing re “install utility”, unless you mean to download form there? I have uninstalled VLC, and installed it from VLC website, but still have the problem.
This guy had the same problem, :- https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=115948
This seems to have cured it as it now works, although I am still getting the pop up as in my OP, (that I know I can disable, but feel it is better left then I can click "build index" if I feel it needs it):-
“Broke or missing AVI index
? Because this AVI file is broken or missing, seeking will not work correctly.
VLC won’ repair your file but can temporary fix this problem by building an index in memory.
This step might take a long tiome on a large file.
What do you want to do?
Build index then play. Play as is. Do not play.”
And whichever of the first 2 I click on ,the videos play?
Thanks to all who have assisted:beer:

Perhaps that will make things clearer. If Windows can't find suitable drivers in its repository then you'll need to go to the website of the manufacturer of the "Multimedia Audio Controller" and download their relevant driver package.
This doesn't mean this WILL resolve the VLC issue, but it MIGHT, and having things in Device Manager not working properly is not the best idea anyway.0 -

Did you read my post above yours? The issue seems to be OK now.
When I went to the VLC website, I could find no reference to any driver packages.
Also I have had no problems with the audio, it was only the video.
