If the problem was simply the irritating "broken index" message, you can turn that off in preferences > input. Perhaps XP has updated the video card drivers in the background.

Try downloading Media Player Classic. I use it to play anything that VLC can't play; it produces screen grabs as well. Alternatively, if you're feeling very brave you can have a go with VirtualDub.

I have downloaded MPC and it is very similar to VLC, but IMO not as good, I have manged to sort out how to take and save a photo, but there does not appear to be a facility,(unless I have missed it), to rerecord a video whilst one is playing, in essence to "edit/shorten" the video.

A long shot: it may be a codec problem as a corrupt one can cause problems.

Download and install Klite which will also install Media Player Classic which is almost as good a player if the codecs don't cure the problem http://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

As I said in my post above yours, I have installed MPC, but it dose not appear to be able to rerecord an already playing video!

Will installing Klite attempt to "fix it" on it's own after downloading? Klite shows 4 packages, would I need the "Mega" one?

.When clicking to download via your link I get a warning page from "Panda antivirus safe search protection" that the page contains malware or exploits.

It won't do any harm to reinstall MPC but here's another link for the codec pack. If your av throws up another false positive you know it's over reacting http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_mega_codec/

First of all, I trust you do have a working backup?

For myself, I would run a chkdsk, then promptly go to the disk manufacturers site and download their free disk dignostic software.

Your disk is probably ok, but from a once working video to a duff one without you modifying it - to become self modifying, is a bit worrying.

It could also be a case where you just did not shut down correctly? - Hard disk test asap!

I doubt it is the disc, actually a pen drive, and it works on Windows Movie maker and MPC, as do any videos I have tried that are stored on my computer, it is just the VCL that is giving problems on video, audio is OK. Always shut down correctly.

Have you tried AceStream Player? (Sort of VLC but with streaming capabilities built in).

I have now installed the Klite codec pack, but am not sure how to attempt to fix the problem with VLC, MPC is working.

Go to device manager and see if there are any yellows.

Also type in run cmd, then type in sfc /scannow (note space) and put in your xp cd 1st.
