I am getting the following message when trying to play videos via VLC Media Player.
“Broke or missing AVI index
? Because this AVI file is broken or missing, seeking will not work correctly.
VLC won’ repair your file but can temporary fix this problem by building an index in memory.
This step might take a long tiome on a large file.
What do you want to do?
Build index then play. Play as is. Do not play.”
I have tried both options but all I get is the audio and the picture is distorted, (multi layers), not moving and displaying part of a web page.
Videos I played last week or new ones done today they are the same, however they play OK on Windows Media Player.
I want to play them on VLC as I can edit the videos and take snapshots, anyone got ideas how to fix?
I have updated, uninstalled and reinstalled VLC all to no avail.

What operating system are you using?
Windows Movie Maker will allow you to edit and take snapshots.1. Have you tried to Google the answer?

XP Home Edition, as said, it has worked for ages until today!
The image below is shown when I try to play via VLC regardless of which video I am attempting to play.
Is Windows Movie Maker available as a download or do I already have it? Just that VCL is easy to use.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Have you tried uninstalling VLC and downloading an older version, just in case it's some incompatibility with XP that has been recently introduced? I see you can still get version 2.1.0.

Thanks, I have just tried that but there is no difference, still have the problem.
I have tried Windows Movie Maker, I have managed to get a photo from the video, but don't seem to be able to get it from there to say, desktop.
Still want to get VLC back:(

The file is corrupt. Edit the video in something like WinAvi and it will write a new index.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

By file I am assuming you mean the video?
If so I don’t think so as every, (well maybe not every but the ones I have tried), video I attempt that is stored on my computer will not play via VLC, (but did so on previous occasions), but will play via Windows Media and Windows Movie Maker, which suggests it is a problem with VLC and not the files, (videos?).
If I have misunderstood you then how do I sort ALL of the videos via WinAvi?

If the problem was simply the irritating "broken index" message, you can turn that off in preferences > input. Perhaps XP has updated the video card drivers in the background.
Try downloading Media Player Classic. I use it to play anything that VLC can't play; it produces screen grabs as well. Alternatively, if you're feeling very brave you can have a go with VirtualDub.0 -
This is the latest VLC player version. When installing it will uninstall the previous version before installing http://download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3014-13632_4-10267151.html?part=vlc0

That is the one I installed yesterday from that site, I got the message that I posted in the OP, which I think related to me updating,(?), to 2.1.2, I then unistalled 2.1.2 as per post #4, but have the problems whichever version is installed.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Computer been switched off overnight, I tried again with version 2.1.0, then installed version 2.1.2, both versions give me the image below, audio is OK.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0
