single at christmas

So, me and the guy I was seeing broke up a couple of weeks back (my choice – that ‘spark’ wasn’t there for me) but a lot of people seems to be concerned that I will be single for Christmas!
Personally, I am more than ok with this! Its not my first Christmas in singletown and I look on the bright side that there is 1 less present to buy. I will also be spending it with my family and friends so its not like I will be sat at home on my own drowning my sorrows!
Why do some people seem to think you need to be in a relationship over Christmas?!

Some people think you need to be in a relationship.
Back when I was single my well-meaning but insane cousin got married. She was delighted, loved up and full of the romance that will last an eternity yucky, icky stuff; we'll ignore for now the fact that the man she married was originally cheating on his first wife with her.
Because of this "I'm so happy!" claptrap she felt that it was her solemn duty that everyone should be as happy as she is and clearly the only way to achieve that happiness is to ensure that everyone within her social circle was paired up with the love of their life so that they could presumably go on some sappy love-filled weekend, sitting round a camp fire, roasting marshmallows and singing power ballads to one another under the stars.
Her rather unsubtle gaze eventually became focused on me and I started being invited out for nights down the local and there was always one of her single female friends in tow; presumably the idea was that we would hit it off, sparks would fly, bells would chime and before you know it we were in lost in this seventh circle of romantic hell and surrounded by sprogs.
Of course, none of these attempted fix ups worked and in the vast majority of cases the only thing I had in common with her parade of singletons was the fact that we were all considering investing into a big fund so that we could send my cousin abroad; Papua New Guinea seemed popular.
I slowly removed myself from this social circle, fearing that my monkeysphere would not benefit from further introductions accompanied by those coy smiles and my cousin's immense sense of smug self-satisfaction that if I couldn't be bothered to get a date myself, she would find it for me just as how she had found true love herself.
We do, of course, still talk and somehow over the years she has come to believe that it was her pushing me into dates that gave me the confidence to ask out my fiancee. This isn't at all what happened but I can't be bothered to correct her simply because she's quite clearly crazy.0 -
I split with somebody before Christmas, we still exchanged gifts as we had both bought things for each other and I genuinely wanted to give it anyway. I would have felt far worse staying with somebody over Christmas for the sake of it, I'm not good faking happiness!
I am single this Christmas and I'll be spending the festive period with friends and family and I'm quite happy with that arrangement.0 -
I always think it best to to split at xmas then you don't have to buy any presents0

Or valentines day, that is an excellent day to split up and worked for me.
Her: So where is my card and flowers?, have you forgotten?
Me: Ah no didn't forget I just didn't bother as I don't love you anymore and will be moving out next week0 -
Better off on your own. No present to buy, no fake glee to create when you open yours .... and no juggling whose house you're going to or what you're doing/where/where etc.0

I'd rather be single at christmas than with someone unhappily, pretending to be a lovey-dovey couple for families to keep up appearances.
My last partner I broke up with a week before christmas because I couldn't bear the thought of it. The only downside was that his family had already bought mine gifts and insisted on coming over on boxing day to exchange them. Now that was bloody awkward.0 -

.
^^ This ! It drives me insane, but the cynical part of me thinks that the people who try and make me believe I should be in a relationship are unhappily married and seriously jealous of my freedom and happiness!

It was especially bad as my parents had bought them tea and drunk it since the break up because they thought that they'd never see them again, and they got me a purple satin purse with tassels on that would only suit a cowboy drag queen.
Funny looking back now, horrifying at the time0
