I can't believe racism is still out there

I think that is a common thing, reverting to a language that is not common to all. Wales used to be notorious for it. I have relatives in North Wales and when they moved there 45 years ago it took a long time for them not to have that experience. And when we visited and entered a shop they would switch to Welsh almost immediately we opened our mouths.

That must happen in a very different part of North Wales to where I live!!! As we wouldn't be speaking English at all to each other in north west Wales, only Welsh.

They are if you go out looking for them ;)

The Yid Army thing has been going on for years. Isn't it (in the main) Jewish people saying it about themselves?

Traditionally Spurs have a large Jewish following and have been the target of abuse from opposition fans, although some fans of the club use the term themselves.

Did you read the article? It doesn't explicitly state whether the fans were spurs or west ham fans, but they were apparently tweeting about Hitler and Gas Chambers so it doesn't sound innocent or harmless to me!

Yes, football fans aren't renowned for their politically correct views or impeccable manners, alas.. then again neither are the footballers themselves, in a lot of cases!

Not everybody in Wales speaks Welsh as their first language though do they? Particularly in the tourist areas.

'Political correctness' is nothing to do with racism, though. Well, its not much to do with anything in reality!

Ive been watching my local team for over a quarter of a century, it doesnt mean theres anything wrong with my manners. Or if I do have a day when Im less than mannerly, which isnt often as in person Im generally polite to people, that has nil to do with me being a football fan.

And I know your post above was responding to someone else who commented on the article, but Ive personally never abused anyone who supported an opposing team, either in person or online. And yes there are football fans who behave in ways that isnt acceptable, footballers as well, but if someone has a view and covers that view because its what they should do because they support a certain team, in my view thats just a smokescreen. I do know people who support certain teams and who have views that are bigoted and those views are very closely linked to the team they support, such as hating people who support a certain other team due to religion etc.

And sometimes people grow up in families where they have very strong views on the matter and it gets passed down from generation to generation. It saddens me somewhat that people do link their views to the football team they support, but possibly, given that I support my local team (not junior football), where theres not the same views held or any kind of religion attached to supporting the team like some other clubs, that for me, Saturday afternoon is just a case of going to watch my team and going home and if we get beat, I get on with it and dont start spouting off twitter or facebook abuse to other supporters.

My local football club has won awards for doing a lot in the local community, including working with people who are unemployed, young people who are unemployed, helping them to get professional qualifications, theyve also done courses with people who have mental health issues.

Im actually proud of a lot of what they do and a lot of the courses that the club run, players are also involved. Some footballers and supporters give the very ordinary ones a bad press.

Yeah, it's not everyone, of course. It's always the badly behaved ones that get in the news, not the ordinary folk who just go along to support their team.

So yes, I was responding to the article, which to be honest is not representative of ordinary day-to-day London life anyway, so not entirely relevant to this discussion. I think they were just narked at people earlier in the thread implying that Northerners were racists! Historically wasn't it Yorkshire and Lancashire who hated each other? :rotfl:
