I am afraid that racism is still alive all over the world, even the most enlightened of people have some sort prejudice, What I believe is everyone is an 'ist' of some kind.

Shock horror- the land of Hitler has racists, who would have thought!

It's true, - unlike Germany, Austria has never come to terms with its past.

However I'd like to hope this racism incident it not typical of Austrian society as a whole. :(

Sadly, it doesn't surprise me but then we deal with it a lot at work.

Probably should clarify there's not a lot of racism in work, but we arrange security for events that attract racists and other such imbeciles in order to keep them out :)

Oh it is definitely still out there, my children have been targets of some horrendous racism at school. I don't think it will ever go away.

Been to Austria several times and I've never encountered racism there, but then I suppose I wouldn't, I'm white.

From what I've noticed about the country, they are very traditionalist and (dare I say it) stuck in the olden times. The parts I visited were in the country and they do the old shin-digs and yodel and dress up in their lederhosen etc.

And I never saw much multi-culturism (is that word?!) over there, so completely can see how your son might have encountered this. We don't over here as we have people from all over the world and of all colours, but in Austria, you are Austrian and nowt else by the looks of it.

Never visit the north of England, its rife up here.
Even my work colleagues have a go, although not usually directly.

Even I am shocked by some of the vile remarks I have heard.
One that sticks with me is my boss saying, ooh I have known !!!!!!! For years but she has never smelled bad.

Honestly that's one of the more tame remarks.
I reckon its more of a age related thing and will slowly die out, but that's many years away yet and what do you do til then.
    63 mortgage payments to go.

    Zero wins 2016 😥
  • Of course it is alive and well, all over the world. Try, for example, being a Jew and visiting quite a few parts of the world. Or try looking Arabic and visiting Israel. Or being anything non-white and visiting parts of Europe, or, in particular, Russia.

If you are white, you'll encounter racism in plenty of places, too.

Nor should you think of it as a white / non-white thing, either. The last case I did involving racism was a group of black lads bulling a group of what they charmingly called "Pakis". Before that, I did a case where a man of Afro-Carribean origin took great exception to having "monkeys" as neighbours - they were Nigerian migrants.

You only have to look at the news items on European football violence to see the problems... monkey chanting, neo Nazi salutes... not good.

In some countries it is growing - the trouble is that in an economic downturn, people always look for someone to blame and 'different' is an easy target.

    Oop north racism is rife.

I encountered some EDL types last week in the city centre who were protesting about something or other, one of them told me that now muslims have ray guns that when you are shot with one you turn muslim and that he refuses to have "Sharon" law in this country.

He couldn't understand why I was laughing so much.
  • I'm against Sharon law too, whatever it may be.....
