I can't believe racism is still out there

Muslim ray guns and Sharon law?
Quick, someone phone the Daily Mail!0 -
Fwiw, DH (white, Jewish but not practicing, I.e. he isn't wearing any recognisable garb like a kippa or anything) has experienced racism in London. As have I, (white). And I've seen it and heard it across other cultures. I've also been in a situation where a client when I was a solitor's clerk asked to have me replaced because of their presumption of my religion (after a week of trial with good relations, because DH was at the same court and the family saw me chatting with him, (nothing inappropriate, the barrister actually said...hey your bloke is here in another court i just saw him, go and say hi....' and presumed correctly he was Jewish and thus that I must be and thus felt it untenable to have me there).
Life goes on. Its less bad here than in other places I have lived.0 -
I encountered some EDL types last week in the city centre who were protesting about something or other, one of them told me that now muslims have ray guns that when you are shot with one you turn muslim and that he refuses to have "Sharon" law in this country.
The EDL guy with the 'Never Submit to Aslan' sign was a personal favourite of mine... as much as you can have a favourite racist moron, but you get what I mean.0 -
Oop north racism is rife.

He couldn't understand why I was laughing so much.
Except that didn't happen did it?Pants0 -

I might be for it, if it means you eat nice fruit like Sharon fruit often. Once a week nice fruit eating Sharon law. I could deal with that.0 -
Never visit the north of England, its rife up here.Oop north racism is rife.
They are, shall we say, 'steeped in tradition' up north, from what I've seen. It was a bit of a culture shock going there to live and it's not like I am from a well-to-do Observer-reading sort of place myself :rotfl:
Their attitude towards women is terrible! It doesn't surprise me that they're also racists.0 -
This "treasure" racially abused myself and my daughter a year or so ago - that's a then 8 year old and her mother happily chatting and walking home from school only to have this eejit confront them.

I am not one of the people mentioned in the article, this was another incident. I'm white British and it was intimidating but also extremely bizarre. It was interesting and quite satisfying to see his face pop up in the news.0 -

In some countries it is growing - the trouble is that in an economic downturn, people always look for someone to blame and 'different' is an easy target.
I do hope your son has spoken to his teachers about it. Not that they can prevent it but they could help them come to terms. Sadly it's an aspect of growing up.
I remember Lewis Hamilton getting similar treatment from F1 crowds in Spain IIRC
I think it's probably even more important that people in areas where there are few 'foreign' people are educated about racial tolerance and understanding than in areas like London. I live in a big city but I know people living in small towns and villages with very racist attitudes. It doesn't help that they also read the Mail to fuel their prejudices. I was highly amused when their offspring married a Thai, a Pole and a gay!!:rotfl:0 -
Know exactly what you mean. That's one of the reasons why I put 200 miles between me and 'the north' over 40 years ago and have never regretted it.They are, shall we say, 'steeped in tradition' up north, from what I've seen.
