I can't believe racism is still out there

They are, shall we say, 'steeped in tradition' up north, from what I've seen. It was a bit of a culture shock going there to live and it's not like I am from a well-to-do Observer-reading sort of place myself :rotfl:
Their attitude towards women is terrible! It doesn't surprise me that they're also racists.
Surely this is a joke?
Stereotyping/tarring everyone with the same brush (in this case Northerners) in a thread denouncing prejudice and racism!! :rotfl: If it wasn't meant as an intentional joke then your own prejudice is simply invisible to yourself.
OP, it is unfortunate that racism still exists but I am surprised that you didn't already realise this. Two of the most racist people I've met are cockneys. Surely London has some racists, too?
Just remember that in this country you can walk into a record shop and buy a CD (or download one off iTunes) that will use that N-word over and over again. Our youth listen to them as they're very popular.
Because of that words like that will never go away.0 -
Never visit the north of England, its rife up here.
Even my work colleagues have a go, although not usually directly.
Even I am shocked by some of the vile remarks I have heard.
One that sticks with me is my boss saying, ooh I have known !!!!!!! For years but she has never smelled bad.
Honestly that's one of the more tame remarks.
I reckon its more of a age related thing and will slowly die out, but that's many years away yet and what do you do til then.
I'm from the North of England, and I would totally have to disagree with that comment. IMO it isn't anymore"rife" up here anymore so than any other part of the country. Your comment is basically saying that all Northerners are racists, you can't generalise like that.
In the town and county that I'm from, I can honestly say that I have hardly ever heard any racist remarks.0 -

That's racist, that is.0 -
I had never really heard much racism living where I do now, and working in London. In fact I'm not sure I'd ever heard anything. Then I visited my partners family up North who live in an ex coal mining village where it's something like 98% white. I've never heard so many racist comments in my life I was totally shocked. My husband has actually had to tell them on many occasions it's not acceptable to say stuff like that.
When they came down to visit is we've had quite a few comments which I won't repeat but basically saying how there are lots of black and Asian people living here. Which actually there isn't really so goodness knows what they'd come out with if I took them to London.
And yes were all posh snobs down here too apparently!
I went to Uni in Manchester though and it wasn't like that there. I don't think it's necessarily a northern thing, my friend lives in Devon and says some of the things people in her small town never fail to shock her.0 -

I did not say it was more rife Oop north, just rife.
I am a northener, born and bred here. Racism was much worse when I were a kid, but it has not entirely disappeared yet. That surprised me to be honest. I would have thought it would have died out by now.
I am still shocked by just how nasty ppl can be to others for no reason other than skin colour.
My boss is just vile, I have tried saying something when the comments start flying but as half the staff are on the boss' side, I fight a losing battle.
What exasperates me more is the victims, they are obviously upset by the comments and so am I tbf, but they do nothing about it, and I can't do much myself. We all need the job.
Every day I go to work I hear at least one racist remark, its getting to me, its upsetting me and its not aimed at me, who knows how bad it is for those its aimed at.63 mortgage payments to go.

Just because Sharon Law is on Facebook does not entitle you to refer to her as 'Whatever it may be'. That's nearly as bad as the racism.neverdespairgirl wrote: »I'm against Sharon law too, whatever it may be.....You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0 -
I am quite surprised you have never encountered racism in London although I am pleased you haven't. I was born in London and lived and worked in London for over 20 years and came across lots of racists. I had quite a few rows at work when people would start racist rants.
I lived in France for a while and was horrified at their attitudes. Admittedly I was living in a small village but one of the neighbours had a Cuban friend visit and a lot of the villagers were very rude to him - one spat in his face! I spoke with the neighbour who had had the friend visit - he was a young guy in his 20's and said one of my friends from England was thinking of coming to visit and she was black. He said he would tell her not to come as a lot of the villagers would be rude to her and to me.The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

That's horrible that you have to endure that day in day out and that shouldn't happen. But just because you experiencing it up here in the North, doesn't mean that it's rife up here. You could work anywhere in the UK and experience the same thing, would it then be rife there too?
Is there no one above your boss, a HR department that you can make a complaint too? No one should have to put up with that, if I was you and it was making me that unhappy, I would be taking it further, in this day and age, it's disgraceful.0
