New SKY customer

I want to get the basic sky package for my aged FIL for a Christmas present. Are there any problems ordering it in my name then transferring /cancelling the contract in 12 months? Naturally, I don't want it installed until after Christmas and I don't want them to contact him direct. What are the best offers and has anyone installation/customer service problems?

I think you'd be opening a can of worms if you intended to open the account in your own name unless you actually live with your father-in-law. I doubt you can open a Sky contract at any address other than your own.
The only way to be certain is to ring Sky and ask what options are available to you….

Nothing to stop you paying for Sky indirectly via direct debit to your FIL's bank account, of course.
  • So I cannot order Sky for him, pay for it, and have it installed in his house?

    Why not ask Sky ?
  • I cannot believe that something so simple can be so complicated. I want to order through TCB and get £115 back. If I ring Sky I may scupper my chance of getting the cb. Any advice.

You could go online via TCB and use their online chat service for help. I did this when I signed up and using chat didn't scupper my cashback.

How would a call to Sky for information do this? If you call, you don't then have to immediately sign up!
Regardless, I think you paying for a year as the account holder and thereafter wanting to transfer it to your FIL will be problematical at best.
I'm pretty sure you can still give Sky as a gift, but you'll have to contact Sky direct in order to do it.

Because the householder's permission is required....they can hardly turn up and install it without him knowing.
You could in theory sign up in his name with his agreement, but the correspondence will go to his address. Then after 12m you can change the DD back to his bank-if he agrees. That way the contract is always in his name. You just finance it for the first year-is he happy to do so after that date?

Since it's a surprise Xmas gift, the OP's FIL seems not to know anything about it. Of course, after a year the minimum term will have ended and the father-in-law will be free to cancel if he doesn't want to pay.

I'm also not sure the OP will be able to pretend to be his Father-In-Law as you suggest because the OP will have to give his own bank details to Sky...

But the bank details for the DD don't have to match the customer's name. The account can be in FIL's name with anyone's bank details; the a/c holder is still liable.

Are you certain that's the case? Earlier you were suggesting signing up in his Father-In-Law's name, would Sky allow a different name on the Bank details? Surely they'd suspect fraudulent activity?
