From another thread, it is obvious that the OP has contacted Sky about this proposed gift (going ahead ?), so the question of liability is something that they need to clarify with Sky.0

Why? Sky don't care whose bank a/c the DD comes out of as long as it's paid. The Sky account holder is still liable for the payment. Lots of people have phone contracts paid for by other people, for example.
Since the bank will inform the account holder of a DD being set up, how does the issue of fraud arise? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Update: signed up for sky online, and the cashback has tracked. All I have to do is to ring and change the installation date as it cannot be done online apparently. On the matter of the account, sky don't seem to give a monkeys as long as its paid. They only want to know the address of the installation, no name required.
The only problem is that they have sent out the card and a welcome pack which we will have to intercept!0 -
I cannot believe sky! The installation date was fixed for 20th December as that was the last online date available. As I wanted it for his Christmas present, I need to change the date. Rang last night and can you believe it there are NO dates available NEXT YEAR, apparently. So we are signed up to SKY but cannot get it installed. As the operator has now cancelled the 20th installation, we are unable to access the online calendar, so have to keep ringing in order to find installation dates for after Christmas. What a farce. Has anyone any suggestion as to what I should do now?0

The question has to be asked over why you agreed to an installation on the 20th of December in the first place if that was never acceptable? To be honest, wouldn't your Father-In-Law have appreciated the gift even more if he'd been actually able to view on Christmas day rather than sometime later?
You could have allowed the installation on the original date and then unplugged the Sky+HD and wrapped it as an Xmas present. Obviously too late now...0 -
When were you going to actually tell him about this, if the install was booked for 20/12 (5 days before Xmas)?
Were you going to arrange for him to be out all that day, or just leave it to the installer to jump out of his van shouting 'Merry Christmas'?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Goodness does no one read posts correctly? I wanted to buy the basic sky package as a Christmas pressie. The installation date of the 20th is 5 days before Christmas and therefore it wouldn't have been a surprise, would it? The instal date of the 20th was the latest available date ( you have to put a date before you buy the package) and I was unable to change the date online - I was told by the sales team that all I needed to do was to call and arrange a later date - say 28th December. When I tried this last night, I was told that there were no dates available AFTER 20th December. Can this be possible? I appear unable to book a date to suit me/him. By the way he is 85 so I really don't want any complications with the installation. Any advice please?0

It will be "possible" - why would they lie?
Just get it on 20th December.
It will still be a surprise when it comes!
And he knows the truth about Santa.
And there are good programmes on before Christmas as well as on the day.0 -
Too late now - they've cancelled the installation on the 20th. Will ring again tonight.0
