As they say on The High Life.
O deary me!That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Have a look here
yep, fix socket is what we have upstairs and downstairs. Can you trace back from outside to see which it is?
We tried, but once it is in the house, there are no wires to be seen at all. A bit of a mystery!
Indeed, EE said that we were getting a new kit meaning no need for engineer to come in....saying that, if we say it doesn't work, I suppose they wouldn't know why and might come out?OP seems to have chosen EE with a self install.
ha ha, sounds less polite where we are! I think we have now reluctantly accepted we will need someone to come in anyway. We will try to get the old guy back. Now that I've learnt much more thanks to you guys, I can question him and then run the tests and will be better able to gage if he knows what he is doing. I expect he doesn't and we will need to resort to a proper engineer. Oh well, at least we have identify the likely issue rather than getting even more frustrated when things are no better with fibre!O deary me!0 -

Where does it come in - top or bottom of the house.Indeed, EE said that we were getting a new kit meaning no need for engineer to come in....saying that, if we say it doesn't work, I suppose they wouldn't know why and might come out?
It will work just not probably very well I suspect. As it seems to be your internal wiring then if you ask for someone to come out, it will be chargeable.0 -
Half wayWhere does it come in - top or bottom of the house.
The box is at the bottom, cable going up and then inside the house between first and second floor, but no cable to be seen inside!
Yes, we are accepting it will be chargeable. At least if we can get it sorted once and for all that will be that. I'm also wondering whether it could be fault on both ends, because some days are much worse than others. Today, I wouldn't know we have any issues, internet pages are charging ok, but other days are terrible, can't even scrolled down pages. We also used to be without internet access for hours, constantly disconnecting, but we haven't had that problem for a few weeks now, so all very odd.0 -
Just wanted to say thank you again for taking the time to respond to this thread. I've really learnt a lot from it, so very grateful for your support.0

Have you tried changing the filters yet? It may not be the issue, but it's a two minute job to rule them out.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Some developments! We've managed to find the test socket...it was in the loft! So did the test, with and without filter, and this is what it has come up with. Not much difference with the connection speed, but a definite difference with the noise margin.
Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 761 kbps 201 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.5db 40.4db
Noise Margin 6.3db 9.0db
Now I think we can deduct that there is an issue with the internal wiring from that test, but shouldn't the connection have shown a significant improvement if it was only an internal problem?
The engineer is coming on Monday. What should we expect him to do? Would this indicate that the whole rewiring needs doing? Could this be expected even if it has only been done 2 years ago?0 -
Arggg, I am so confused!! I've just re-run the test with the router plugged in the office again and here's the result
Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 761 kbps 252 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.5db 37.3db
Noise Margin 7.0db 8.5db
So not that different to when plugged in the test socket, but different to what it was last week!! Never thought this technology could be so complex!0 -
forgot to say, did it with and without filters same results0
