Rummaging for a cigarette packet and lighter, when you choose to, isn't the same as trying to find a phone, pick it up, press to answer it while driving. Also, a smoker would have cigarettes mostly to hand, expecting to rummage for them.... phone users have their phone in their bag not expecting to be called.
Also, with a phone, there's the distraction of "who's that?"
Phone users who answer their phone in the car probably have it to hand.
My phone links by blue tooth to the built in sat nav, so the number comes up on the screen. The button to answer the phone is on the steering wheel and the sound comes out of the radio speakers. So no need to distract other than a glance at the sat nav screen.
The only thing missing is texts, which sadly don't appear on the satnav screen.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Okay then.........apart from Exmoor, the Quantocks, Blackdown Hills, Glastonbury, Wells, Wookey Hole. Cheddar, Montacute, Selworthy, Dunster, Porlock, Axbridge, the Ancient Mariner @Watchet, Nether Stowey ...................................what has Somerset ever done for us ?????
That's a heavily edited list of NT highlights!
Given paddy ash down so where to go.. That amazing apple brandy. Mulberry. Hmm, given Saul somewhere to go.
. Alice temperly. Given whats his face, cameron macintosh somewhere to go. lots of people hide put in somerset! Lots of rock to build Bath out of.
I tell you what is awful. Being east of the levels and being sent to hospital in Taunton. Bloody awful onerous drive. Its not the nearest hospital, there are at least two closer in miles, and four in time.
Have to admit, Taunton isn't a highlight of Somerset for me, but I know people who seem fond of it.0 -

There is no distraction of whose that, not panicking, if you are MAKING a call.
I'm not opposed to the mobile ban in the least, I'm pro it. I'm just surprised there is such vehemence to a smoking one.
I think it should simply be a smoking while driving one, I see a lot of people smoking in work cars ( with writing on the side) which presumably is 'smoking in the workplace' if one is going to be pedantic.
I'd like better sized more stable drinks holders in cars and super long straws.
Frankly, most of the time, I wouldn't mind a potty in my seat too.:o. Its so distracting needing a wee.

At least those parents remembered to put their children in the car...........
Ach, don't tell me you've never left a child somewhere.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Its the whole 'this is a crusade against smokers' thing I think.
I believe that smoking in a work vehicle is indeed prohibited as it is a 'workplace'.
I don't use my (posh alert) heated car seats as I find it very distracting for a similar (possibly more advanced in the process) reason!0 -

So, as a smoker and a driver, would you agree with Nikkster's suggestion that smoking and eating are probably similar in their level of distraction while driving?lostinrates wrote: »Frankly, most of the time, I wouldn't mind a potty in my seat too.:o. Its so distracting needing a wee.
If we are really serious about making sure that drivers aren't distracted, we should ban children under the age of about 12 from travelling in cars.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
SOmething similar happened a few years ago near where my parents lived in SE London - a giant hole opened up one evening on Blackheath Hill (the A2). About the size of a bus. Caused, in that case, by old chalk mines. It's known there were lots of them, many illegal even at the time, but exactly where isn't always clear:

(Natch, being the Telegraph, the focus of the article about the hole is on local house prices.....)...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Also, if you're on the phone you're having to process information, listen, reply, make decisions etc.
With a fag there's none of that0 -
They've decided to shut Worcester bridge now... so that's shut down Worcester town centre0

.
e.g. if I am going on a long journey, in the past, I've been known to pull into a petrol station, fill up the car and buy a packet of crisps, pack of sandwiches and some wine gums. I then get into the car and rip open the sandwich pack so I just have to reach ... but, the sandwiches I buy are cheap/small with simple fillings... e.g.a £1 egg/mayo, so not dripping with salads and meats that take two hands0
