The village of Pitton, near Salisbury in Wiltshire, is flooded.
Sunny here, with blue skies. I'm not flooded.0 -
The weather here is !!!!!!. I have a river down my hill again. Glad I don't live at the bottom. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

Some neighbours here were allowed to build a bungalow in the farm (for retiring parents, but ostensibly for farm development ....where is the roll eyes smiley?) . They had a two year planning row two argue why it should be built on the opposite side of the road from where planning wanted it. Planning wanted it in the historic flood meadow for the mill pond. Mill pond is still there, meadow still floods. Council couldn't see why building over the road was both better for both houses and possibly ecology as well as just.....cheaper.
In relation to this and the post above re the £1m house.

Not my side.
I understand Shrewton and Tilshead have both had a bit of a bad time too. I haven't tried the roads over that way.
The road that's always cut off north of me,p in even a relatively small amount of rain bizarrely isn't. But I'm told my routes to our alternative station and m4 are ok, but with great new lakeside views..

Looe in Cornwall has flooded every time/a lot this winter. They regularly flood.
When you look around at buying houses, you realise that it's a traditional Cornish fishing village and, back in the day when fishermen lived there, the ground floor was used for boat/net storage. Stairs would typically rise to the 1st floor with living quarters.
What's happened over the past decade or so is that, increasingly, the ground floor's been converted to one of: extra living space, separate dwelling and sold off; holiday let.
Others have been converted into shops.
Mevagissey is another one that floods every big high tide....0 -
Where did our chum from here buy a house in the end?
Anywhere 'at risk'?
Can't remember who it was now.... I'm like that0 -

Well.......I think they'd have a strong argument if they had said, no....we think its poor for character of the area, but you have all those old listed barns you aren't taking care of, how about converting one of them into a single storey house. It would have been the ideal compromise IMO. Of course, the parents and son would have had a courtyard between them which they might have felt too close, but , it would have answered two problems, the decaying listed buildings (too expensive to maintain to listed requirements for outbuildings ) and not in flood zone.
Its an obvious solution to me!0 -
Thought I'd post this link to where my friend in Florida lives. This is not the same house, it is a rental property in the same area. It is in a hurricane and storm surge area, so the houses are built up on massive stilts. You park your cars and boats underneath, and if there's a surge move them to higher ground and your house stays in tact. They are built from materials designed to withstand hurricanes too:

Floodplains - perfect spots for these traveller camps. Most of the time they're OK and they can move to another easily enough when it floods.0

Except travellers are often applying, and being granted under different application of rules, for permanant dwellings on designated traveller camps.
Some of this wet land has always been good lush summer grazing and productive land in summer. Because of the very fact its lush and wet. They have different ecologies to land that isn't prone to this sort of wet.
Adding drainage to make it year rou d productive or suit ale for building makes a problem that the water is going somewhere.
I think we just have to learn to accept somethings are what they are and should be used in a way not for maximum human gain.
Not that that helps anyone flooded of course.0
