I don't really like Allen films. I mean, I'll watch one, but..,,its not my thing. I'm already self satisfied enough. I don my need the extra dose I think.

I can't remember which movie that was a line from but it definitely sounds like one of his...

There was an Open Day on a house I could have looked at today, but I didn't go as it's an hour's drive and the weather's bad and:

    • They bought it for £165k and have put hideous wallpaper up and now want over £195k
    • It's got allocated parking, just one spot, I want a driveway
    • It's interesting, but odd. Two bedrooms, each with an en-suite - but no loo for visitors, meaning if either loo/shower packed up, then there'd only be one other and it's in the other bedroom.
    • It's not really where I "want" to be.
    • I think it's a terrace, all at odd angles, so probably can't get that close to the house; lots of pedestrian areas I think (not driven round there yet)

On the other hand, I wonder if I'm just miffed at asking prices being so much higher now and if I'll regret it in time.... oh well, I can phone them next week and ask if it's been snapped up. If it's not been snapped up, I'll have a look.

I don't envy you PN - I hate it when stuff in my basket at Amazon goes up in price by a couple of quid and find it very hard to buy such things even if the price is still ok having seen it cheaper before so for a house it would be a nightmare.

Having said that when I bought my first house I was gazumped from an offer of 132 odd and they accepted 135 which the agent asked me if I wanted to match and I declined as I felt I already had an accepted offer. Fast forward 12 months and I did buy my first house on the same road, slightly inferior, for 165k
    I think....

Can't remember whether I've mentioned on here (probably have, so apologies).

There was a house on sale around Easter last year, that was above my price bracket. Decided I would view when I returned after Easter hols with the parents -typically it sold in the meantime. That was the house I really felt miffed that I'd missed out on (but it was my fault for dithering).

I happened to be walking past x weeks later after seeing another nearby property and saw people moving out. But the sold price never appeared on rightmove (I kept checking).

It reappeared for sale mid-Dec - at 205,000 rather than the original 180,000. I was very tempted to go for a nosey around, but didn't in the end. Apparently the original sale fell through and a change in the sellers circumstances meant they stayed. Then things changed again.

I had been very tempted in April to tell the agents to let me know on the very slim chance that the sale fell through. Who knows what might have happened if I had. I might be living in a more 'desirable' area, but would have a downstairs bathroom... and be mid-terrace.

As it turns out, I paid more than either of those figures - but have a (small ;)) upstairs bathroom, a proper garden, and can't hear my neighbours running up and down the stairs.

It's really difficult trying to balance the 'wasn't meant to be' with trying to find what 'is meant to be'. Can't offer any advice other than keep, PN, but I think I know how you feel.

At the time I was living in Nikksterville, a mate bought a house (tiny and terraced) out on the far west of the town. He made less than 6k per year and was on a 3-year contract but the house cost quite a bit under 10k. ;). The next year they electrified the railway to London and house prices went gaga.

MIlton Keynes wqas trying to get people to buy houses and they did a part-buy/part-rent scheme to get people on the housing ladder. Another mate and his fiancee camped out overnight in sleeping bags for two days to get a head start in the queue.

All his workmates (me included) ferried food to them in thermoses. At one point we got a miniature table (with a tiny vase of flowers in the middle) and camp chairs set up on the pavement just big enough for both of them to sit at it and the food was served to them by thier workmates with cutlery .

    They got the house!

Not sure if the big storm ever materialised; there've been some gusty moments and a spot of rain, but certainly no massive storm bigger than the last.
My sibling has one approach road to her estate; accessible at both ends .... she tried the first end, tree down/blocked, drove 1 mile round to the other end, another tree down/blocked. It must have been cleared/in the process of being cleared as they couldn't have left the whole road blocked and nobody able to get home.

Having said all that, I just heard a big windy gust outside

It's bad here. Not good at all. DH and a friend had To go and help relief milker move a big branch from a bit of farm yard too narrow to get the tractor in properly at this time of year when cows are in.

I'm trying to be a bit more Australian about things. AFAICS that largely involves being insouciant about things like huge animals that want to eat you.

I had to look that up.

Unlike when I was trying to work my kindle earlier, and mainly ended up looking up the meaning of 'and', 'it', 'the' etc instead of getting to the menu.

Gen - I'd be more concerned if you weren't at all worried. It's completely natural. You're human.

Oh I do that all the time... I keep having to hit the Help on big computer as can't change to the internet bit on kindle. (rolls eyes ;) ) One of these days I might get some time to start reading the vast number of books on my kindle - including Wolf Hall and Bring out the Bodies, both long reads..... (read them already in real books). I will be so glad when old home is emptied of Stuff :o - will only have to sort all the Stuff in new home then :o , at which point might get some leisure! Possibly before I drop dead? Or possibly not. We definitely have Too Much Stuff!
