    Are these bricks frost-proof?

Yes, that's why I think that paving slab sort of one that's a reproduction is a bit of a more prudent thing than brick bricks. Because the idea of spending every second spring cutting out bricks from path ways doesn't appeal tbh.

Doozer's will squeal with laughter at me considering repro anything, but I do think they look ok. They fooled GDB. :D

I haven't seen them in the flesh mind!

I had pictured a mattock as some kind of larva (I think it was the 'grubbing' bit).

I have a lot to learn about this gardening business (esp as I now have one to maintain :o) - I'm pretty sure my parents have never had a mattock so that is my excuse for that particular ignorance :)

You probably don't need one Nik.

The first and important thing to learn is what you want from your garden...what kind of look you want and if you are prepared to do the work to maintain that and whether your soil likes the plants you like.

I want to be able to sit outside in the summer sipping G+T/ wine/ Pimms/ whatever else.

I would like to grow some veg (courgettes are top of the list).

I might get a paddling pool.

That is about as far as I have got!

I have a friend who has some garden design experience. On previous visits she has told me I have some nice plants and she has told me that she is going to come round one weekend and tell me what I have, how to look after them and help me to tame it a bit. I am going to take notes and provide food and wine.

    :)

I think said friend is going to provide me with cuttings of a number of herbs (she has a teeny tiny garden, but grows an incredible diversity of veg, fruit and herbs - clever lady). She has also done some interior design stuff too... :D

Once the weather is a bit nicer, the garden is a bit tidier and the Nikkster garden catalogue has been compiled, I'm sure I'll post some pics of the specimens - will happily provide anyone with cuttings. Next time there is a 'Rates garden party extravaganza I'll make sure I bring a bag enough to take home a haul of cuttings, don't worry :)

    How far are you?

Not that far. Its an awkward East to West journey though (would be a lot quicker doing the same miles North to South). I think it would have been preferred if I lived on the same side of the same town :o

I don't know if there is going to be another one, but you are welcome to visit Nikkster. I have a friend on the green fingered forum who ha seriously green fingers. She took cuttings from my roses for herself and every single one grew!! And you know those little pot roses you get in supermarkets? She planted one out......its an amazing small flowered and small leaved climber now! I'm nothing like that green fingered! I get a poor success rate with rose cuttings ( I forget about them partly:o). But I'm good with rejuvenating very sick ones.

Ok, style, this time not clothes. We have a Brick house. But have always wanted brick paths. Is it ott, just one area of garden?

Not new bricks, but maybe reproduction slabs, some look quite convincing I think....

    Or

But is it to matchy, or worse, mismatchy nearly matchy with a brick house? Its just in my small heart garden, two paths and a tiny terrace area big enough for a breakfast table......

I don't suppose there are are any blue bricks on the house? Matching is good, contrasting is good, engineering blues would resist frosts, regular bricks might blow at some point (maybe what you want?)

Not quite matching would look odd initially but they're going to get dirty quickly anyway, any mismatch wouldn't last all that long.
