OH won't let me pay someone to do my tax return and refuses to do mine himself. So I do it, but constantly ask him questions throughout. He never says he'll take over. Bit of a bug bear. He's an accountant, its obviously easier for him. And mine is more complicated than his.

We allowed the hospital to deliver MIL. Of course, they c0cked up and delivered her to her house, rather than ours. So DW has just picked her up.

Rather horrifying that they delivered her home and were happy to leave her in a house on her own.

In good form I wouldn't mind doing them really.

But then, I would have got us in trouble trying to claim dh's travel from Brussels , because I thought that was a fair thing to try and claim for. :o:o.

Worse! They didn't leave her on her own. Our cleaner lives in her spare room (FOC in return for keeping an eye on her), but she was at home as she has a streaming cold. We were trying to keep grandma well clear of her whilst she's infectious.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I'm an accountant, so pretty busy right now finalising tax returns from the clients who always leave it till after Christmas - but at least I have now filed my own return!
Quite often an accountant can be worthwhile for one visit to show you how to keep your records and to help you with what you can and can't claim.
I have had a few clients who pushed the boundaries. They are now ex-clients.

I don't want to push my luck, but it's very useful to be able to ask if you can claim X or Y (I'm self-employed). Like, for example, a new phone you use 50/50 for work and non-work, or a desk for your study at home.

Glad to hear it's not a case of the unshod cobbler's children for you!
My perfect house would have that, but with sliding doors so it's open or not.

I saw a makeover programme on the telly ripping out a woman's doors between the rooms - she was about 80 and came in part-way through and said "My (dead) husband put those up, I want to keep them, without that the room's too cold". They'd not thought about one person in a house heating it all and trying to get the big space warm at all.

Those sorts of doors are quite common in the 5 storey terraced Georgian townhouses in London. The one I'm thinking of (it's now a Chambers!) has it, with folding oak doors between the two rooms on the first floor, allowing it to be one room or two.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Our sitting room has some goddam awful byfold doors that lead into the room behind.

One day it will be great for entertaining, for now it just keeps the dogs out while we wonder how much decent doors would cost :)

Doesn't matter how squeaky clean you are, you don't want the hassle and expense of an investigation.
    What is the expense?

Did you see the story the other week where a dementia woman was delivered 'home' to the wrong address and tucked up in a stranger's bed?

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/435859/999-bunglers-leave-dementia-sufferer-in-stranger-s-house
Lilian Taylor, 88, was dropped off in her nightdress at an address she no longer lived at after being discharged from hospital.

The door was answered by its current resident, an elderly man, who was persuaded to let Mrs Taylor in and put into bed before the confused pair were left alone.
