If I live long enough .... I plan to investigate them while I am still mobile, then write down the ones I prefer/hate.... just in case.

I'd rather be in a home than trapped immobile, at home alone .... waiting for 2-3 short visits by a stream of inattentive strangers doling out microwave meals and tablets..... left alone over 23 hours each day and night.....

Yeah, you should have done the meet/greet the minute you/he were in the same building, within 10 minutes would have been ideal, an hour acceptable .....

It was quite difficult because I was in Mexico. I did actually talk to him within 10 minutes of being in the office at the same time as him, but I obviously did not say the right words.

Agree totally. When I get to that sort of age I think I'd like to move into one of those retirement villages where you can live independently for a bit, have a little help when you start needing it, and move into the on-site care home when you get to that point. My mum spent some time in a really great one of those. It struck me at the time that if it's still around in 30 years' time, it's the sort of place I'd like to live - sort of like living in college as a student, but with more health problems and fewer exams to revise for.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I suect , frankly, its good for me to have my head pulled out of my posterior over such things as mr kilplings pies. I don't have to eat them after all.

When you said you objected to RP eating things you were ethically opposed to, I assumed something like venison - not Mr Kipling pies.

I'm in favour of venison and not mr Kipling pies, but i confess I am typing tongue in cheek about the pies.

    Sort of.

(Its a real moment where I 'm hoping those who have met me might get there is humour in this and the original pie post. I really do hate cheap, factory produced food with no reason for its existence but to peddle sugar and plastic fats....but....)

Its one of those humour points I understand the medium isn't good at conveying. I should have added a smiley.

I'd never buy Mr Kipling pies - and, given a choice of plates being handed round, I'd see if the others were a better option.

The fillings are inadequate and tasteless and the pastry doesn't hold its shape, is quite dry and textureless.

If they're lemon, I actually prefer Tescos own, as do familija K.

Others, we don't really eat, but I don't buy Mr K unless they're cheaper.

  • I've never had Mr. K's pies or anything else made by them, doesn't seem as if I'm missing much.

I thought next week was going to be quieter than this week's been - when I last looked at my diary, it only had dates in for Monday and Thursday. Then, today, I found out that Tuesday and Friday have been added in, and Friday's Manchester, which is a bit of a pain!

In a manner which makes us think that OH and I have succeeded as a barrister-couple, we are both in the Court of Appeal next Thursday - different cases, but in front of the same panel of judges. I've made him swear a great and terrible oath that he won't watch if I'm on first, I think that would make me feel much more nervous than I do now!

They're as rare as hens' teeth .... need to start shortlisting them asap .... and then get ahead of the rush :)

Fees are high too; I've no private pension so it is very unlikely to be an option. I'll get a little oap place, but not in a place like that.

From your link "Community Fee: £5,094pa for one person or £5,870pa for two people." So you buy it, pay that, pay council tax ..... sums won't add up for many.

Oh yes - getting a place there does require advance planning before you're decrepit enough to need it, because waiting lists can be pretty long, so if you wait until you need the care before you start on the list, you're unlikely to get anything in time. My dad has friends, though, who moved in to a flat there while they were still perfectly fit, healthy and capable, and probably only late 70s or something. They love it there.

For the properties you can buy, you put yourself on the waiting list, and then every time a place becomes available, they invite people on the waiting list to say if they're interested. Some people only want the 2-bed rather than 1-bed places, and others only want to be at one or two of the sites rather than the others, or whatever. So then they take all the replies and allocate the place to whoever's highest up the list out of the people that want it.

If you get allocated a property and you want to take it up, you don't have to try to sell your own house in a frantic hurry - you can rent the place for as long as it takes your home to sell, and then buy the property you're already renting. I think you can just rent them without any intention to buy, too, but I'm not so sure about that.

My parents went on the list for a bit when my mum was alive and my dad was caring for her, but the only places they got offered weren't suitable for someone who couldn't manage stairs, so they didn't put themselves forward for any of them.

However, not everyone has to be rich. St Monica's have three developments for the sort of people who are able to buy a property and pay £5k pa, but their 4th development is aimed at people who wouldn't be able to afford the other three in their wildest imagination - Monica Wills House has a mixture of long lease-purchase, shared equity and social tenant flats. There's not a great deal of detail about the arrangements for getting in there on the website, but I've seen the hard copy brochures and stuff that you get if you fill in the enquiry form, and IIRC, you have to be in some kind of "less well off" income bracket to be considered for there.

If you'd like that particular place, though, PN, you'd better move to Bristol now, because I think it's only open to people who either live locally or have close ties to the area.
