TBH, with the extent of your husband's injuries I'm surprised the hospital haven't already reported it to the police.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

I don't know whether they will as he isnt dead, hasnt lost any limbs and is a grown up. If they have and the police just haven't got here yet will we be in trouble when I call em tomorrow?
Just googled apparently they don't as people get bitten by their own dogs but it is logged so when/if you report it theres a chain of evidence.0 -
That's good to know.
I'm sure you wouldn't get in trouble for leaving it, but I would definitely do it as soon as your husband feels up to it. Otherwise the owners could twist it to make it sound like you only reported it out of spite because they refused to pay the vet bills.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
I'd tell them you will go to police, if/when you do then be aware that the dog may not be put down, but the owners may be telt it can only be in public with a muzzle, this has happened to a few dogs that I know of.0

How long do I leave it before I report to the police?
As in how much of a chance do I give them to sort it out amicably.
You don't leave it - if the dog attacked your husband it should be reported straight away - no chance of sorting things out. What if this dog has attacked and injured someone else in the time you have been trying to sort it out amicably? How would you feel, especially if it was a child?0 -

Take it you haven't read the whole thread then as you would see they initially promised me it would be PTS. Also I didnt want it to be rehomed but its fine feel free to take a phrase toward the end of a thread and turn us into aiding and abetting a child killer0 -

Thats the worry, if they had done as they said and had her PTS it wouldn't be necessary but as they haven't im gonna have to man up and take the flack.0 -

Actually your initial post said nothing about the owner agreeing to pts, only that a friend was saying that the dog shouldn't be pts. Only later did you mention the owner agreed, but their attitude changed regarding the bill and not telling you where the dog was which is suspicious to say the least. Regardless, this should be reported if your husband has been hospitalised. The dog is too much of a danger. A dog that has attacked before and an owner not managing the situation - if it has attacked before why on earth was it out without a muzzle on? I'm a dog owner and dog lover so not anti dog, but anti irresponsible owners.
Please report it - as has been said, there are worse things for a dog than pts. And others are at risk all the time this dogs is around and not managed. A dog that attacks is clearly an unhappy dog - there could be any number of reasons but it has gone beyond that now.
I wish your husband a speedy recovery.
PS - I am certainly not saying you are aiding a child killer! just suggesting that there may be further reaching consequences than simply a vet bill.0 -

Probably because the owner made all sorts of promises to the victim last time it attacked so it never got reported to the police.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Imho.....:)
ALL dogs have triggers...Think of when your dog meets a shady looking character outside/going by your window and isn't too sure. This is a trigger, some dogs have bigger triggers than others
The problem isn't the trigger, Its how the dog reacts to the owners commands when that trigger is pulled....and how the owner deals with previous triggers. If you Don't deal with previous triggers when they are young then they become problem triggers as an adult dog.
It looks like in this case(only going by the info the OP gives) that ,that trigger was pulled and the owner had NO control over the dog.
No doubt when the dog has attacked before, the owner has not been able to deal with that issue and understand triggers and dint learn how to get it fully under control
Is that the dogs fault....NO. Its the owners fault, they are the ones who trained it and have actually done the dog a disservice
Should the dog be put to sleep. ..........Thats a difficult one, With the right owner ,it may never be out of control again...........But its finding that owner, its a big breed dog and finding a owner that can deal properly with these issues is going to be very difficult
Imho, Rather than have the dog be in kennels and with the above, sometimes it is better for the dog to be pts,
BUT I would be directing your anger at the owner(not the friend who said to re-home) as It is the owner who is responsible for the training of, or lack of training of this dog
I would report it to the police(especially now the dog has temporarily disappeared) , the owners are probably going to say your hubby got in the way of the dogs fighting, but at least it is logged for future .0
