That's h7ghly likely, it may even be the dig was goaded by somebody with a stick as a pup, old folk often wave sticks to fend off a perceived threat too, which is why socialisation should included a wide variety if human behaviour, such as hi vuz jackets, hats, umberellas, crutches and sticks, wheelchairs, as well as 'normal' men, women and childrem
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

There are also a fair few old uns round here that walk with sticks, if we are right and thats her trigger the lack of warning means she still needs to be put to sleep
Gonna go talk to her owners again later today as they need to pay for the vet treatment my girl had last night.

The additional information you now have puts a far different slant on it. I would be very concerned at a mastiff size dog that has carried out an attack on a human, having already bitten before. I always like to try to rehabilitate/manage safely, but it isn't always possible, and sometimes the sad decision has to be made. It seems in this case that the owner doesn't disagree with you.

As I said before, I hope that your OH and your dogs are able to recover from this and build up their confidence again, but it may take time and patience.

I agree. Euthanasia isn't the worst thing that can happen to a dog. There are so many large 'status' breeds in rescue with no issues, finding a home for one with a bite history would be hard, and to find one safe enough to not run the risk of it attacking someone else even harder. IMO the owners should do the kindest thing and let it pass away with some dignity and with its owners by its side - far better than festering away in kennels with minimal human interaction because of the risk it poses.

Hope your hubby is on the mend soon, as well as the dogs. You may want to consider having a trainer or behaviourist work with your dogs to try to prevent them becoming defensive/reactive towards other dogs as a result of the attack.

More worried about the husband at the min his fear will transmit to the dogs.
Really don't know how to build his confidence. Both him and the female had nightmares last night anyone got any pointers on how to sort the human out?

Right just spoken with the owner complete change in attitude. No interest in paying the vet bill and wont tell me what they have done with the dog.
How long do I leave it before I report to the police?
As in how much of a chance do I give them to sort it out amicably.

Emotions will be running high, and they may well have gone home and been given different bits of advice from friends/family/professions which has made them change their mind.

Personally, I would tell them I was seeing the police on Monday to report the incident. It gives them a day to think about it, and to the police it won't seem like you've taken too long to report the issue. Perhaps go down the route of what would be best for the dog - going peacefully at thte vet with the owners, or possibly being seized and kept in kennels for days/weeks/months before the courts came to a decision on the case. You just need to look at the Lennox case to see how badly that option can go..

Thank you. We have been very reasonable I think, I could go down various routes but I just want vet bill paid, dangerous dog put too sleep. I should have taken both dogs but to keep costs down for them I only took one and am caring for the other one at home.

This has annoyed me hubband cant move and I have to blu.in feed him at the min.

I know its hard to put yourself in their shoes, but you have to remember that they almost certainly love their dog as much as you love yours. This may well have been a huge shock to them and they're probably looking at their previously loveable hound asleep in front of the fire and finding it incredibly difficult to get used to the idea that they are now expected to just kill him.

I'm not saying they're right, but try not to judge them too harshly so soon.

Im more annoyed at the fact they don't want to pay for the vet fees.
    Plus its already bitten before.
I know it will be difficult for them im still looking at from the point of view that currently I am having to feed and wipe the backside of my oh. Because their dog that they knew was nasty got out.
