Apart from knowing what a "Joker" card is, the use in this context (in my opinion) was to imply that I was playing a part, the part of a "a vulnerable female joker". At least that was my interpretation but as I say, everyone interprets things differently, hence the diverse myriad of people's opinions on this and every other subject. Variety is the spice of life ! Right or wrong, I believe the poster intended to use the phrase as a form of condescension or sarcasm which I believe was out of order and unnecessary, otherwise why the use of the words "vulnerable", which I am not, and "joker" which I was not.
Quite rightly, you mention context. Given the context and the choice of 2 meanings of playing a joker, I could not ascribe the meaning you attach, but I could easily ascribe the other meaning - that you declared yourself to be female to trump all other argument.

Quite plainly to me, in answer to your 'otherwise', he was addressing your - irrelevant, unless you intended it to have an effect - declaration that you are female.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

Again, I say again, I could not google for a price of a consumer unit as I did not know what it was called, hence the question in the first place. All I wanted to know was the price of the unit, why is that so hard to understand. I just wanted to know if I could AFFORD to change the present one and the base cost of the unit had everything to do with that and nothing to do with the fitting which I accept is about the length of a piece of string, according to who fits it (i.e. a one man band or a company). I vaguely remembered having one fitted years ago and the price of the unit (from memory) was expensive in itself. So basicly, if we could not afford the unit itself, we could not afford to change it.

    Simples ! :D

I guess everything is down to people's interpretation of the message and I do appreciate that many tradesmen come on here to answer questions to the best of their ability with the information they are given and I along with others are grateful for that. I don't nevertheless expect sarcasm (not from you I hasten to add) which makes me sound like an incompetent idiot, i.e. vulnerable female joker for instance, where did that come from !

Anyone ever heard of tact and discretion on here ! I just wonder if the same comment would have been made if the questioner (me) had said "I am just a male who knows nothing about these things - then I wonder if the same person would have come back with "when you are playing the vulnerable male joker "!

By the way Valhaller no reference was made to playing cards in the comment "vulnerable female joker" so why would I presume he was referring to playing cards ? "Joker" can infer someone having a laugh in my part of the world, as in "he is a right joker". Again down to interpretation.

So thanks to those who offered useful advise which was much appreciated.:T

Look, twas I that used the joker phrase.

You got all the advice based on what you asked, we all gave the same advice.
Seems pretty clear that you didn't ask the question you wanted answered, but we all answered the question that really wanted answering.

The term female joker meant that not having got the answer you wanted, or even sympathy, you put all your cards on the table and claimed we were picking on you because you are a girl.

Utter tosh on your part and again you should be ashamed of yourself for biting the hands that were trying to feed you.

Joker equates escape, or to trump card, or get out of jail free card, which in your case is what you were trying to do.

    :T:T:T:T

I for one do not equate being clueless to being female.
    I'm out.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

The cost of the unit will be much less than the cost of testing and installation- if it was me doing the job (a female electrician no less - ha), then the unit would be 20% the labour 80%

Thanks for the info and for clearly outlining the difference between the cost of the unit in percentage terms and the cost of the labour.

It sounds like if the unit is based on a base value of £350, then the Labour would be £1750, completely out of my budget taking as it does the cost of both to over £2000 :D

So now I am a vulnerable female escaper, trump card or get out of jail free card person ! :rotfl: What a vivid imagination you have. I would never have believed that I could evoke such a "jump" from asking for a price for a fuse panel to your description of my character.

Well there you go, there is no accounting for some people's interpretation of another person's simple request.

Let's just say, I asked a simple question at the beginning of this post which has just been answered simply by the previous poster (fluffpot) and leave it at that.

No the cost of the unit would be around £150. And my price is for an average sized home in London, so it might be cheaper depending on your location

Great, that sounds a lot more reasonable. We have to get an electrician in anyway to move a cooker switch and light switch in our newly fitted kitchen, so whilst he is here I will be asking him for a quote.

    Thanks for the advice.;)
