Price for a New Fuse Panel ?
Comments
-
I doubt ,Macman, that a consumer unit made in China is any different than one made in the UK or EU.
All would have to pass safety regs.
I had one fitted earlier this year and the labour cost was £20 a hour.0 -
The prices we all mentioned where for the whole job, hence the variation due to area labour costs, type of home etc. You gave no indication this was a DIY job.
If it wasn't, then you would still need an indication of installation costs.
The consumer unit cost you could easily check yourself from any suppliers website
Regardless, you should always fit a consumer unit with at least 50 extra circuit capacity, (my opinion, not a regulation), than you have at replacement time, makes life so much simpler later on, and separate circuits for the freezer or alarm systems etc, makes very good sense to me.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

Yes I could have done if I had known what it was called which if you read back in the posts you will see I was corrected on by MacmanAlso, I have only ever heard these referred to as a "Fuse Panel" or a "Trip Switch Box" by everyone I have ever met!
Now I know I can look it up myself.
Thanks for all the advice (albeit some being sarcastic!). By the way, the prices quoted at the beginning of this thread (between £350 and £600) did not split it between supply and labour so how would I know which was for supply and which part was labour? Also I would have thought the title of the thread would have given a hint of what I wanted "Price for a new Fuse Panel".
What is it with all you men presuming I should know what I am looking for when I am a woman who has never changed a fuse? Testosterone flying everywhere0 -
im an electrician and by what u are saying u have a lights circuit a sockets circuit and a cooker circuit
you could do just fuse board and test 300 then if there is the bonding to gas and water 50 (as its a bungalow around 50 house would be double that)
then anything that fails the test ie metal light fitting where light circuit has no earth0 -

Thats quite a disgusting post to be honest,
Lets look back;
You asked what has now turned out to be an ambiguous question.
You clarified after real good advice was given.
A search for, (in your terms a switch panel, new fuse panel), would have given exactly the same as "consumer unit"???
And then you call me, I'm assuming you mean me, sarcastic???
You could just about get away with that but to then play the vulnerable female joker?
Sorry, I and most all others here treat any poster exactly the same, but if you had said that earlier, the response would have been softer.
But then again, you would have said I was being chauvinistic, :T
Bottom line is we all tried to help you, now you not to judge you, why throw the reverse switch?I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Better to ask initially how long the job will take, and then keep a record of hours done. Watch out for "just going to get a bit from the supplier".
A competent electrician would have all the materials before starting.
And count coffee time.
Insist on a bill itemising labour and materials and get a receipt.
Take photos of his van with him alongside. My neighbour helps me on this. Get his registration number and tax disc. Get and check his Trade number
If it all goes pear shaped you have something to go on.
Above all BE NICE lol0 -

"You asked what has now turned out to be an ambiguous question.".
So "Price for a new fuse panel" is ambiguous? How? Also I did do searches for fuse panel and trip switch panel on eBay and a couple of other sites and it brought back everything but a "consumer unit" so had no idea what it was called. As I say, everyone I know refers to the Panel as the "Trip Fuse Box" or "Fuse Panel".
I am not judging anyone, I just thought as I obviously did not know what I was looking for, people would cut me a bit of slack !
By the way, your comment about me playing "the vulnerable female joker" is in my book again sarcastic and judgmental. I am not a joker and I am not vulnerable, that is just your assumption and judgment based on no facts.
The Oxford dictionary meaning of vulnerable is "(of a person) in need of special care, support, or protection because of age, disability, or risk of abuse or neglect:". I am none of these.
Anyway, next time I need an answer to a question I will know to look elsewhere.0 -
Most tradesmen will know to the minute how long the job will take and quote you accordingly.
The bad 'uns will try to work out how little you know then scare you into accepting a high quote.
On their mind too is whether they will declare your job for tax purposes or how much they can make from materials taken away from the job, e.g. cabling and maybe the old but usable unit and sockets.
This site needs to have a squeaky clean reputation and if you feel that you have been misled, you can complain to the forum organisers.0 -

Not so much "misled" as having been subjected to condescending remarks but I have come up against it before on this site unfortunately. Then I get some good advice from people like yourself and it redeems itself once more but as you say, it is unnecessary on a site like this which sets out to help people like myself and for which I am grateful for.:)0
