Please could I just ask a quick question of you ladies?
Does it hurt when the implant is taken out? Mine really hurt when the doctor put it in - I assume he didn't use enough anaesthetic - to the point where I am rather anxious about having it removed :(.
    Thanks.

I'm a fitter and none of my patients have felt a thing so far!
As long as the local has enough time to work and the person checks it's working before they make the small cut you should be fine. You may feel a little pressure/stretching but shouldn't feel pain.

    Hope that helps.

I hate to buck the trend but there's no point only getting the happy answers! Plus I am on my third implant so the difficulties below have not put me off...

The first one went in fine. A little pain and discomfort but brief and all over. Getting it out was a different story. It had been placed too close to my elbow so was very difficult to remove. The nurse tried for a while and then went to get another nurse who had a go before getting a doctor. Eventually, after about 15 minutes, it came out but not without me bleeding quite a bit on the bed and pillow (apparently, I'm a bleeder!) and the implant hitting my funny bone internally on the way out. That was like hitting the funny bone from the outside but 5 times as bad. Not good.

They then put the new one in higher up my arm and getting it out three year later was far easier. Uncomfortable and a little painful, but nowhere near the previous time! And the third has gone in the same arm and was fine.

So it seems from everyone's experiences that usually it's okay, but I had to be the difficult one!

Since you had the first one the device has changed (implanon to nexplanon) and with that came a new inserted that makes it pretty impossible to put in too deep. So hopefully you should be ok next time!

Sorry for starting a thread that has scared some people, hope the talk of bandages hasn't frightened anyone!! As I said I'm on my third implant, my first one was put in too deep (i have an awkward vein that she was trying to avoid) which made the removable trickier for her, but I didn't feel anything other than the anaesthetic needle sting and the sensation of being tugged. The second implant came out no probs and the third one went in good too. The bandages are really only there to reduce bruising not because you're arm is going to fall off. The cut is what 5mm at most. It doesn't require any stitches. But in my work I'd rather not be having to explain what they're for if I had them on both arms. x

Mine didn't hurt coming out, though the nurse had to have a good rummage around to find it

Shame it didn't suit me (constant bleeding that led to anaemia) could do with a longer term option

  • As I'm on my 4th implant I thought I would share too!

Firstly, they have stopped Implanon and have replaced with Nexplanon. I personally don't feel it is the same and the dosage seems higher (really had some issues with constant bleeds for 8 weeks, mood swings etc) although the bleeds have now stopped, I'm still incredibly irritable. Doesn't bother me really but others may have something to say :)

Getting it out for me was.... Long winded! My arm wouldn't numb properly and the nurses phrase was 'it's like trying to sedate a horse!'. I had a very large dose of anaesthetic to get it out and I didn't feel very much then! Make sure if it still hurts you ask for more!

I would also suggest taking a friend to keep you occupied and distracted! DON'T LOOK AT IT!!

    Oh how lovely!!:rotfl:
Definitely ask for more if your arm isnt properly numb. When mine was being inserted the dr did ask a few times before she did the procedure and ended up using more anesthetic. Unfortunately she didnt tell me to look away before she picked up the needle so I panicked and almost fell off the table trying to run away. :o

Life is slowly slotting into place
  • So I've had mine done. And boy was I making a fuss over nothing the injection for anaesthetic was no worse than my flu jab and I felt nothing else.

One question though she put Two little sticky strips over the insertion to reduce scaring plus a plaster over the top, I couldn't have a preasure bandage as I was alergic to it.

I've taken the plaster off 5 days later as she said but when can/should I take off the little sticky things? They look stuck on good.
  • Steri strips I think the stickys are called.
