The Septimus Heap series is fab if she liked Harry Potter. She might also like Artemis Fowl, and the Percy Jackson Lightening Thief seriescurrent debt as at 10/01/11- £12500

Thanks. I'll look into Septimus Heap; it does ring a bell.
She wasn't keen on Artemis Fowl. I have no idea why, although I've only ever noticed boys reading it so perhaps it's sufficiently gender skewed that it doesn't grab her. Not that I really believe in gender rules (I have a tomboy), but you probably get my gist.0 -
Oo I also liked the Sally Lockhart series by Philip Pullman, read those a few years ago.

Just had another couple of thoughts, how about Douglas Adams' Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy, or something by Isaac Asimov? Although he's known as a sci-fi writer, not all of his stories are pure science fiction. I'd suggest The Caves of Steel to start.Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j
If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!0 -
How could I forget to mention Hitchhikers- fantastic and can be read on two levels. Also wondering if Ursula le Guin or Sherri Tepper might appeal. They might be a little old- but frankly given the plotlines on Eastenders and the like kids these days seem to know a lot more than we might realise or hope!0

Another vote for Tamora Pierce here, DD is re-reading all hers now at the age of 22 so clearly they last well
Narnia and Swallows & Amazons maybe or are they too old-fashioned now?
'The Once & Future King' by T H White is a really good retelling of the King Arthur legend
Wilkie Collins - The Woman in White (and others - Dickensian thrillers)
Life of Pi
'Luke & Jon' by Robert Williams
'Holes' by Louis Sachar
Terry Pratchett
Anne McCaffrey especially the Dragonrider series

On a skim read I haven't noticed these, apologies for what is no-doubt repetition:
Diana Wynne Jones (I started with Charmed Life and think it is one of her best)
Mercedes Lackey - starting with Arrows of the Queen (with a caveat for rape and torture in the 3rd in the series)
Joan Aiken
Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea books
Lois McMaster Bujold - probably the most adult of this list
Pat O'Shea hounds of the Morrigan
Cynthia HarnettBut a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.
