The Spooks books by Joseph Delany are fab. There is also The Belgariad series by David Eddings that I started reading about that age that she may enjoy.

I second this. As a young teenage bookworm, I also particularly loved:

    • The Diamond Throne, The Ruby Knight and The Sapphire Rose by David Eddings
    • The Ship Who Sang, The Ship Who Searched, etc by Anne McCaffrey, also anything in her Dragon, Tower and Crystal Singer series.
    • The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley. Also The Blue Sword.
As an adult, I'm still happy to sit down with one of these old friends.
    Good, clean fun.... :D

    Oh.....

If she likes historical element what about the crystal cave /hollow hills etc by Mary Stewart? Its been .....ooh, a come of decades or so since I read them so I'm struggling to recall. They might be a little slow paced for a modern fantasy reader, but Merlin has been popular recently.

Yet another recommendation for anything by Anne McCaffrey or Terry Pratchett.

I also enjoyed the Crystal Cave series by Mary Stewart, I'd forgotten about them until they were mentioned on here. I am racking my brains here to remember what I enjoyed as a teenager, too many years and too many books ago...

If she does enjoy the classics, do get her kindle fixed or replaced, they can be downloaded for free through the Gutenberg project.

    Thinking back to 13...

I loved Robin Jarvis's trilogy that starts with 'The Woven Path', its more complex and grown up than the ones about mice! Based on Norse mythology but set in modern(ish!) London.

Watership Down was a huge favourite and I still re-read it. Its a fairly hefty book, and quite dark and violent, its not fluffy bunnies hopping about on a hill.

Jostein Gaarder is an excellent author for young adults, most people have heard of Sophie's World but he's written far more and they're all fantastic.

    I'll keep thinking...

The Unwind series by Neal Shusterman. Surprisingly subtle young adult dystopia-for my money, better in some ways than The Hunger Games.
