Services are processes running in the background (can see them in Task Manager). You shouldn't have 2 anti-viruses running (slows down the computer), but don't use msconfig services tab to disable them. Use Start - Run - services.msc and set Startup type of one of them to Disabled to see the effect. Even better, uninstall one of them via Add/Remove Programs to free up a bit more disk space too.
It won't need to use virtual memory as much so will be a bit quicker. Disabling unnecessary Startup programs and uninstalling one of the AVs will also help.
Thanks, will have a look at that link.
Strange re: the anti viruses as I didn't have them running and had cancelled it all until I wanted to run them, maybe it was the automatic updates I had set on.
Anyway, i've uninstalled avira antivir as that was a free one and had bought AVG Pro, so will use my money to good effect.
I've done all suggested - it does sem quicker today, thanks.
One thing in add/remove that I didn't install that i'm sure of........Yahoo! Install Manager.
1.86mb - must have come with a program I installed - can I safely remove?
Thanks0 -
Yes.
Not a huge HDD . You should really back up the HDD on to CD or DVD, so that you can have it at least 50% free.
Sometimes a format and complete re-install of the OS is the way to go.
That way, you'll be more likely to keep the machine lean and mean, by backing up regularly.0 -

It's what I am doing now, burning things to CD when I can, then when I have burnt all I need, run a de-frag0
