A Singularly Lonely Christmas

  • As you are going to keep them in all the time have you thought of any in particular?

I'd recommend some of the feathered leg bantams perhaps? Our millefleurs bantams don't roam too far except on very wonderful days and are darling, darling pet girls ( they live in our front garden in fact).

Also a wonderful gift was our non bearded silkie bantam. Another really lovely pet girl, slightly more wanderlust than the millefleurs but less than the silk propers or hybrids. I love her alien little black and blue face and her cat like feel, and she's rather 'snugly' . (All ours free range in the truest sense so we get a good idea of natural wants!).

My husband has a particular soft spot for the millefleur bantams. They are nice tame little birds. I might even get him another pair for his birthday. The cross of millefleur and silkie is almost feral, like wild creatures.........not what I expected at all.

No. I hadn't honestly got beyond thinking "chickens" :rotfl:

I've googled the ones you've mentioned and they are so lovely. BUT mine will be on an allotment, and, although it's a nice village (seems to rarely have vandelism problems etc), I'm reluctant to get anything that will attract attention...

My lottie neighbour's son breeds various different hens and bantams, so, tbh, I was just going to ask to see what he had, and take it from there.

    Exciting!!

my sister and hubby had 2 hens a few years ago and I was fascinated - could spend ages sitting on the garden bench with a mug of tea, watching the hens' antics. They had their own little personalities (or am I just "humanising" them ;)?).

I occasionally volunteer at the local Cats Protection League re-homing centre, helping to socialise cats and kitties so they can be re-homed. Sitting in a "cat cabin" with 6 tiny but beautiful kittens clambering over me for an hour is bliss !

I like the sound of the crafting clubs mentioned earlier (sorry forgot poster's name) and planning to find similar here.

I've followed this thread from the start and found it really interesting and heart-warming (sorry if too sentimental). I have family and friends yet struggle with long-term drug resistant depression which somehow restricts my enjoyment of things. So, thanks to all of you for saying things that have helped me too.

New Year's Eve is the last hurdle for this year, then we have a bright shiny year ahead of us and I'm determined to stamp my mark on it !!!

Chickens definitely have their own personalities...that's one of the reasons I hate to see them so badly treated and used as an industry (but that's for another thread!).

6 kittens? Sounds like my idea of bliss too :)

Very best wishes for 2014...let's all stamp our mark on it in whatever way feels right for us!

I went to the gym. Walked it there and back as bus ticket hasnt been renewed yet, really enjoyed, tomorrow and on Hogmanay Im going to do a body pump class, its possibly my least favourite class but its a reduced timetable just now and everything I do like is off, so I need to do it. They also close the pool for 10 days over christmas which is a shame as I like a swim and a sauna, but I need to keep moving.

I had 3 days off at christmas and 2 off at hogmanay, but if I had stopped for a week, Id have been starting the new year half a stone heavier easily.

Thats about as exciting as my day got. Im possibly going to a zumba charity event next week for the people who died in the clutha pub disaster, I dont teach zumba anymore, gave up my licence about 2 months ago but will probably go along and do my bit

Im starting this new year over 2 stones lighter than I did the last one and its been really tough in parts. I put on weight so easily and I also eat like Im a six foot tall builder when Im five foot 1, to say I like my food is an undertstatement.

Anyway, Im still eating, just much more healthily, once you get out of bad habits, you can make good ones and stick to them, this year has taught me that at least.

Yet again I find myself wondering what all the fuss was about and resolving to do things differently.
Spent too much ate and drank way too much and not at all sure if my family even enjoyed any of it.

Those TV ads have a lot to answer for!

Also instead of those nice people quietly crocheting or quilting I have one friend who is an emotional vampire and another who has problems. Friend with problems had a Christmas party.....mistake.

Anybody get one of those lovely xmas jumpers?.....lol.

I'm off to get some provisions in tomorrow and have decided to get a onesie.....i think. It will be ok as long as I don't look in the mirror, and remember to not answer the door.

    I will look stunning......5ft 2...and nearly 11 stone I think..!!!

My uncle used to have chooks, real amazing characters apparently, one used to beat up the family dog on a regular basis and would guard melon....she loved honey dew melon and wanted it all to herself. She also used to hunt down mice like the SAS to eat.

That's great, Byatt - thanks for linking. Not only were the illustrations fab, but the entire premise of making small, incremental changes was really inspiring. :D

(I have my gym bag packed. ;))
