Yes but they were IN school hours. This sports day was out of school hours, IMO that makes it optional.

Thank You To Everyone Who Commented On This Thread, Our Child Did Go, And Ended Up With A Sprained Ankle For His Efforts After Slipping On The Sodden Grass!!

I Was Very Disheartend With Some Of The Comments Raised In This Post

I Am Not A Bad Mother Who Encourages Their Child To Do Has They Please Regarless Of The Consequences, I Encourage Him In Everything He Does, And The School Has Our Support.

However The School Should Maintain Some Of There Decisions, Especially When They Cancelled The Previous Sports Evening And The Weather Was Not As Torrential As Yesterday.

Also Some Of You Commented That Children Should Go Out And Do Pe In The Rain, As It Does Them No Harm, Well He Does Do Pe In The Rain, And They Have Swimming In The Oudoor Pool In The Rain,

Well I guess the school would have trouble knowing the weather would get worse, wouldn't they?

Parents are sorting one family out, the school is trying to organise many people, inc staff etc. I assume they thought the weather would pick up but they can't keep shifting the date indefinitely can they? Obviously, they would have stuck with the original date had they realised the next available one would be worse!

Hope his ankle recovers soon but seems a normal childhood accident to me - can't protect them from all risk.

Mark7799 - But at least there is a potential practical application for English and Biology,

and physical exercise has no practical application? (I can't comment on the OP's case as I have no knowledge of how their day is structured)

but I would put swimming in the same category as sports day unless it was in school time.

Although I hated swimming in school, I finally managed to learn to swim in my mid-30's - something I wished I'd faced up to much earlier.

I don't think I made myself clear - subjects which are on the curriculum and during school time are one thing, but forced attendance at an extra-curricular event in which the child has no interest just seems to defeat the object.
What about things such as parents' evenings?

I think kids can be taught that there are some things you just have to do (ie school and school work) and some things which are optional, and which will not appeal to everyone. I come to work from 9 - 5.30 because they are my contracted hours. I don't do unpaid overtime because it is optional and I don't see the point.

I find the way people in this country are considered freaks if they have no interest in sport astonishing, and I believe that it is this focus at school level which begets this attitude.

Disagree here (appreciate this is a whole new topic) surely if we encouraged more physical activity the 'obesity problem' would diminish?

I think this is one we will have to agree to disagree on:p

I guess you could say that sport is a very important part of the school curriculum nowadays given the quantity of overweight and obese children we have in the UK!!

My school encouraged everyone to take part in sports. Girls had to have a couple of lessons of football and rugby, boys had to do netball (! - minus the netball skirts), and if you wanted to do an alternative sport, you had to find 10 pupils that wanted to do it, and a teacher willing to supervise.

I remember hating every second of girl's hockey, but that's life! You can't love and be good at everything!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

What particularly irks me about the secondary school my boys are at is that every year the letter about it inviting parents to attend tells us that we WILL enjoy it.

I've been once, and I hated it almost as much as DS1 would have done, had his hayfever not been particularly bad that day. ;) So once again I watched DS2 come in last - by a painfully long way - in a long-distance race. And felt like a complete prat because a) I was in tears and b) I seemed to be the only one still cheering him on for keeping going.

DS2 was happy enough coming painfully last, and DS3 wants to go again this year (which is mercifully the last we have to endure).

IF my eldest was the kind of child who could take pleasure in the achievements of others, or feel the house spirit so noisily demonstrated by others, then it might have had some educational benefit for him. Since he can't, and doesn't, and would have spent the day with his nose in a book and come home sneezing and sunburned, it always seemed more sensible to keep him home. Even his tutor (a PE teacher!) didn't disagree with me ...

As for the OP, common sense should have prevailed at school. I hope the sprained ankle recovers quickly, and I hope no-one was more seriously injured. But honestly, will the sky fall in if Sports Day doesn't happen this year? Yes, I know some children will be very disappointed. But they have to learn to deal with disappointments in this life ...

Lessons are lessons. You attend them and participate whether you want to or not. PE is an essential part of the curriculum, particularly given how little exercise many children get (whether overweight or not.)

However, I don't really see how a school can insist that after school activities can be classed as compulsory. There are far too many factors which might prevent a child from attending. Rain isn't a factor here though, unless there are little ones that would have to be taken along to watch.

So thunder, lightning and a bad storm and they would still go? Tornado? Floods? list goes on.....

rain wont kill you but it can give you a cold, thus more time offschool. "Sports day" should be done during the hours - not after school. If it was p!ssing it down, i'd say no.
