Yr 10 - work experience

Work experience isn't necessary these days taking a week out of school to be treated lower than the low will do your son no good at all, I'd say goto glasto and enjoy yourselves.0

Having never done work experience - it existed and was then 3 weeks long (trident) but wasn't available at my school in the 80s, I can't comment on usefulness.
I was reading with alarm the comments about it because my yr9 son has recently got on an outreach scheme at a Uni but to go further work experience will be considered in applying for a place, so thankful for diasieggs comments.
I've never been but I *thought *Glastonbury took place late June? If so wouldn't year 11 when GCSE exams are likely to be over be the time to go. Ok I realise you don't know date of last exam versus dates if it is June but a possibility??
GCSE exams generally run from mid May right to the end of June - don't get caught out! Also, some subjects such as Art and languages have practical or speaking exams wheich take place well before the other exams (March/April)[0 -

For me, I think this is what I would do, postpone till 2015 and hope the final exam dates finish before the dates of Glastonbury.0 -

Appologies if ive read this wrong but the OP is saying her son is in the current year 10 and will be doing work experience during the week of Glasto for which she has tickets....so the GCSE exams will be the following year for her son...
although you are correct in what you say it is late june and the majority of exams are over by that time...the way I read the original post is that the OP has tickets for the event next year whist still in year 10 ....whilst it might seem better to go the following year just because its more convenient doesnt mean she will be able to get tickets for the following year.frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend0 -
I can't believe a 14 year old lad wants to go to Glastonbury with his mum!!!
I know right? That's why I have to make the most of it - and I pay of course.
A couple of things
I am a bit embarrassed to say that we went this year too
Whilst saying I have tickets, I have only paid a deposit so could give them up if school are going to be extremely awkward. I am not suggesting he doesn't do it but he does it at a slightly earlier time. In any case he will spend a week or two of his summer hols working there out of choice (it is a preserved railway, where he will be working on the engine, the shop, the ticket office, guarding and running a station so a whole range of activities). he wants to work on the railways as a train driver when he finishes school so it is highly relevant - He needs to be interacting with the public as, like many 14 year olds, he can be quite uncommunicative. To be a train driver, you have to start at the bottom - platform, ticket office etc and my OH (who works for the railways) said at the moment he wouldn't employ him as he is so stroppy. Working for a big company like OH's wouldn't give him that range of activities or that experience with the public.
Ah well, we shall see what happens... Thanks for the responsesI wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

Edexcel are not the only exam board, though - there are at least three others which are commonly used. Perhaps check which boards are used for your child's subjects (probably more than one exam board, as different subject Heads of Departments favour different exam boards)[0 -

I think work experience can be very valuable as mine led to my current career. However, I think it shouldn't matter when it happens. the school may have a box to tick to get it done before the end of the year though.
I would tell the school the other way round - he has arranged this fantastic work experience opportunity at a different time and therefore you are withdrawing him from the school's week (and incidentally going off to Glastonbury). But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

My daughter was lucky enough to get offered a week in Paramount Studios in London for a week when she was in year 10. Unfortunately they wanted her a week after the schools work experience week....the school kicked up a fuss for a few days but calmed eventually and allowed her to go...0
