Does anyone know anything about this? Is it compulsory
Here's the tale
I have tickets for my DS and I to go to Glastonbury next June. I stupidly didn't realise it clashed with the week of his work experience. So whilst I would have taken him out of school - paying the fine if necessary - I am not sure I can remove him from work experience. (yes, I know he should be in school but that isn't a debate I want here, he has had over 9% - lol edit, 95% not 9 :-) attendance for his whole school life, some years achieving 100%)
We are hopeful that he will be doing work experience for a voluntary society that will take him Saturday to Wednesday, so still achieving his five days and that school will agree to this. If they don't, do we have to go along with it? He works voluntarily for the same society many times over the year so I am not worried about his "lack of work experience".

I'm going to get slammed for saying this but take the lad to glasto! I'm sure it will be a lot better life experience than photo copying and making tea for a week.0

Work experience in year 10 is a pretty pointless exercise generally, especially compared to GCSE lessons.
Its probably the best week of the year to miss, actually.0 -
Just a thought, is there charitable work experience he could do at Glastonbury for all or part of each day?0
-
A lot of schools have stopped organising work experience apparently for various reasons, so it is just a decision to make between you and the school. If he already volunteers anyway, it doesn't seem that it would make much difference whether he is there on that particular week.0

Work experience for child number 1 - tried really hard at placement, polite courteous etc etc took chocs in for staff on last day only to be completely slagged off by employer in sign off meeting for basically being too bright.
Child 2 - assaulted on workplace premises and police involved. Subsequently offered Saturday job by employer then randomly sacked just before being there one year.
Child 3 - workplace goes into administration a week before work experience so has to come to work with mum as too late for all other options.
Conclusion - work experience is a complete waste of everyone's time! Go to Glastonbury!0 -
Glastonbury every time!
It's so much more than just music... Green Futures field is all about energy, sustainability, living together; Theatre & Circus areas are full of world class acts and world culture shows; at Green Crafts you can try things from stone carving to spoon making.
And yes, he could help out doing some voluntary work whilst there.... Anything from helping get signatures for a charity to serving a meal at the Hare Krishna tent.
Have fun! Please forgive the badly spelt alias... I am a long time contributor who needed to reclaim anonymity for health/job related posts.0 -
yeah - go to Glastonbury! work experience is often a complete waste of everyones time! and if he does volunteer work anyway..........well, he doesn't need the experience does he?0

I would plump for Glasto too. I did get quite a few years of summer jobs from my work experience and also ended up with a (very long term and good) temp job as a result. In the minority though0
