  • Is your hard drive partitioned? (When you go to My Computer is there a C: drive and a D: drive or just C: on its own?)

  • Disk Frag may help with clearing up rubbish. Or external hard drive is a option, you can pick them up quite cheap now for a 1TB.

We have deleted any items that we no longer need but it is still near max use.

Would an external hard drive be the answer?

an external drive would be useful for backup

This question is asked all the time. A search for wiztree or windirstat would find all the other threads on the same subject

turn system restore off, and then back on

find out what's using the space with wiztree

delete the crap, there is always some crap filling up a disk, use ccleaner, it's free, you probably have a d: partition that's empty, use it, and buy an external portable drive for backup - not for master copies. Defrag would be a waste of time.

Defragging isn't a waste of time, a disk which is nearly full will be horribly fragmented.

But it will not recover any disk space. You really need to free some disk space and then defrag.

Go on then smart @rse, I'm waiting to hear why defragging is a waste of time, lay it on me. I could do with a laugh.

As soon as I posted those words, I knew someone would pick up on it, and it would descend into a pointless discussion about defrag. It was posted to save the OP time, assuming they are going to follow some of the advice at some point before splashing cash on a new machine.

The thread is about lack of free disk space for a start, so defrag is clearly a waste of time in that context, has been done automatically since Vista, and still is a waste of time regardless, however many times it gets repeated as a cure for all PC ills. It's not going to solve the problem, and not going to make the machine faster.

Defrag is done automatically, it won't cure the problem - as mentioned use Ccleaner - it's quick, easy and free.

  • An external drive will do the trick, especially an SSD.
