Maybe they want to sell it quick because the deceased wanted to take all his money with him, that would be a cheque of course.

(Sorry, couldn't resist an old joke)

Since houses where people have died might be less common, one could argue they may sell for a premium!

Anyhow, any house on the market could have had someone die in it since it was built and most people would never know.

Stop being so silly, if you like the house buy it for what you think it's worth/vendors accept but don't waste their time or add to their grieving by insulting them!

I don't know the circumstances of the death, but will find out off the neighbours (they were the ones who told me about how quickly the family had moved to get the property on the market)

But if someone has actually died in the property, is it possible to argue for more of a discount. i.e. the increased risk of ghosts and bad spirits.

I know some might laugh at this, but I have noticed these days, that it's quite common to knock down houses to prevent this happening. Such as the fred west, mick philpott, tia sharp houses were all demolished.

They even knock down the houses next door to obtain a full quarantine.

Well you will be buying a house with nosey, gossiping neighbours who will tell any Tom, !!!!!! or Harry your business so you should factor that into your bid!!

Not only would not many people would want to buy a mass murder's house, they council don't want them becoming some sort of !!!!!ish tourist attraction, hence they knock them down.

If none of the children want to make it their home then then it's better to sell it asap an empty property is a security risk, you need expensive, empty property insurance plus if it's in a dodgy area they might be afraid of squatters. They could also live away. Re clearing the house out, not everyone is senitmental about material things. We had to clear my parents house out after they died and we found it better to meet as a family and do it in one day where everyone had the chance to speak up, take what they wanted and then it was over to charity shops.

  • People do die in houses - fact. People buy houses that people have died in - fact. In my last property one of the previous owners had died of a heart attack in the bathroom. Did it bother me? No, the house was over 100 years old and was bound to have some history. Did we get the house at a reduced price? No, we paid the right price for the area the house was in.

Here is an extract from the official discount matrix for buying from the dead.

Single, old, natural causes - 8%
Single, old, nat causes, multiple hard up beneficiaries - 12%
Single, early death, possible police investigation - 18.3%
Multiple mass murders, major redecoration required - 32.453%
Indian burial ground, possible haunting - 666%

I was wondering from the OP if there was some official scale of discount to expect.

Thank you for this most helpful post:D
