• Do many people on here get a veg box delivery?
Was wondering if you could help me with some recipes for Kohl Rabi.
I think i know how to prepare it and have found a couple of recipes online but just wondering if anyone has any tried & tested ideas or tips for me!!

The one I have is quite big - a bit bigger than a cricket ball I would say.

Other unusual veg that I'm never quite sure what to do with are...
jerusalem artichokes - :o
sprouted seeds (i just usually eat these as they are -anyone knows how to tart them up?)
celeriac - I can make remoulade but what else??

I love trying new recipes so looking forward to hearing your suggestions.
If anyone else has any veg box items then post them here and I can share what I do with them

hiya dont know what do do with the kohl rabi however the artichokes use like potatoes, Jerusalem artichoke can be served with or without the skin - scrub clean and leave it on for maximum nutritional benefit.
Cook as you would potatoes - roast, saut!, bake, boil or steam. If peeling or cutting, drop pieces into water with a squeeze of lemon juice to prevent discolouration. Unlike potatoes, Jerusalem artichoke can also be used raw (e.g. in salads) or lightly stir-fried. however i slight warning they can give u very bad wind lol
the celeriac is also similar to a swede in way of preparing i peel, boil and mash mine its nice on top of shephards pie mixed with normal mash. If your not too keen on some items in your box alot of them let you subsitute it for something else.

Hi,
With jeruselem artichokes, I cut them into wedges and put them in the oven with a spray of oil and some potatoes cut into wedges too. They are gorgeous! All crispy on the outside, and softer, and not as sweet as parsnip on the inside. Do go steady on how many you eat though, the warnings are true!
With the sprouted seeds, we have them in sandwiches and wraps, esp nice with humous and a nice change from salad leaves when between seasons. Sprouted seeds are also nice mixed with grated carrot with a balsamic dressing added.
Enjoy!
• am a lover of all veggies, and I like the fact you get unusual things that you wouldn't normally buy so no substitutions for me!

spanner:
Those Sprouted seed recipes look really good + will try the differnt ways next time I get Jerusalem artichokes. I have heard that if you eat carrots along with them it lessens the side effects so I usually make carrot + Jerusalem artichoke soup but will try roasties now as your description makes them sound delicious!!

pretz:
With the celeriac mash do your mix it 50/50 with potato mash or is it more/less?

anyone else with help with kohl rabi??

Hi ms monkey - I also get a veggie box. I'm quite new to it and we had kohlrabi last week - had to come on here to find out what it was. We sliced it thinly and added it to stir fries. Really delicious. I'm aware of the effects of Jerusalem artichokes - DD made J artichoke and carrot soup and I had wind for at least a day! The kind of wind that feels like your stomach is blipping about like a half full lemonade bottle. speechless-smiley-040.gifTMI? The fact that I loved it and wolfed it down, blissfully unaware at that point about any after effects might have something to do with it.
The sprouted seeds are great in a sandwich with humous which helps to keep them in place on the bread!

hiya yeah i generally do a 50/50 mix and it then uses it as normal however you should cook the celeriac in a seperate pan something to do with the starch however i never have and it turns out fine

Jerusalem artichokes make THE BEST CHIPS!!!, don't bother peeling just give 'em a scrub, Khol rabi is a bit like turnip, use for soups/stews I also make a thing like potato bhaji with them. Celeriac makes a great coleslaw and fantastic rosti.
In our house we call them fartichokes as some of you have flound out!!
