I think Vegas may suit you but I always rent a car when I go, and visit Palm Springs and San Diego. It seems a shame to go so far and just see a bunch of flashy hotels.
  • I see nothing wrong with going to Vegas for a week, we have done that. We have been 13 times, but we do mainly tend to go for 10-15 nights now, and have combined with LA, flown to San Francisco for the day too.

Cold in January though. Can you change it to May or similar? Would be much more fun when it warms up and you could enjoy the pools too.

In January we are going 8 nights in Bangkok and 2 nights in Dubai on the way back. I've never been in Thailand but looking forward to it.
  • Ideally we would like something with decent weather (20c+), a location ideal for adults, sight seeing and relaxing activities.....we hope to stay upto 1 week and have a budget of around £1k each

If your trip is 7 days or less I would avoid going as far as the west coast of USA. It takes two days there and back.

The Canaries is worth looking at. You should get 20c and there are adult only hotels if you want to relax away from kids. There are cheap flights in January leaving you with more to splash out on a good hotel.

We've also done Vegas for a week and it was plenty of time.

Vegas is so full on that it can be quite exhausting and a week there is just right in my opinion.

I'd go back there any time. We loved it.

    Another vote for Vegas

OP says it's a big birthday and anniversary and will not have the small kids either.

    No brainer.

1 week is OK and you can splash out on a show (or two) as a celebration. Hotels will be cheap and you may get a cheap January flight.

A stopover on the way out (New York?) may be a good idea but it will add 2-3 days to the holiday.

Hotels pools are closed from November-April IIRC

    Enjoy.

    Thanks

Must admit the more I look into it I am very much liking the idea of going to Vegas. So do people think 1 week may not be enough for Vegas? Personally (probably stupidly) I was thinking maybe could do half a week in Vegas and the other half in a stop over somewhere else in US? If we do this I guess we have to increase our number of days?

    Thanks
As you can see opinions are divided, personally I'd never travel that far for just a week, as to Vegas itself it's an amazing place and you'll know already whether it's your type of place for a holiday, personally I'd never consider Vegas a destination for a holiday, just a convenient start/end/stopping off point during a road trip - I couldn't stick more than 2-3 days in the place! But if you stop off elsewhere in the US you're wasting even more of your week travelling.

I'd be looking at the Canaries as above - much less travelling, will be cheaper overall, better weather, no jet lag, no massive US immigration queues....

You could try a cruise sailing out from the Canaries visiting various islands and possibly North Africa. We went with Thomson last year and the package included flights from the UK.

If you want to go farther afield they also do 7 day Caribbean cruises on the Thomson Dream which is a nice ship. The weather would also be very good that time of year.

Of the two, I would go for the Caribbean option.

Whatever you choose, have a good time.

    Enjoy.

Do you really expect temperatures to be in their 20s in Vegas in January? I can't see much evidence.
  • Temperatures would not be in the 20s in Vegas. Definitely not. Going there in January would mean a compromise by not going a sunny warm holiday.

That said, we went to Tenerife a few years in a row in January and in the end we gave up on that idea for January holidays because the weather was pretty poor most of the time. Maybe some have been luckier with the weather but I wouldn't particularly recommend it.

For slightly better weather without a long flight I'd recommend Egypt. Some nice hotels there. I'm not totally sure Dubai would be very hot (it was ok when we went in November one year, and quite warm in March).

I'm sure OP will be able to find something that ticks most of the boxes if not all.
