Destinations please..

Options
Hi

We (husband and I) are hoping to go away for a holiday in January. We have small kids, who will be staying with family and just me and hubby are going.

The reason just us is because we have never been away together, due to financial, house and children commitments. In January it is a big anniversary and big birthday for me.

So we are asking for help with destinations, this may be the last time we go together without kids for many years therefore want it to be special. Ideally we would like something with decent weather (20c+), a location ideal for adults, sight seeing and relaxing activities. Please help with possibile places....we hope to stay upto 1 week and have a budget of around £1k each, which is a little flexible depending on the location.

Thanks

  • Dubai? But it would have to be budget accomodation
    travelover
  • I am making a small list and have put Dubai on it.

Has anyone any experience for south east asia countries, with this I am conscious that I would not want to go somewhere that is not very safe to walk around etc.

    Thanks

You ask about Southeast Asia. Personally I would not travel so far for just one week, but in other respects Thailand would be ideal. The weather is at its best in January (so that is high season for tourism); there is a lot to see and do; the food is wonderful; costs are very low if you are willing to stay in local hotels and guest-houses rather than book somewhere designed for package tourists. There is loads of information on the 'Lonely Planet' website, and you can borrow a guidebook from your local public library. Safety is not even something that needs any thought, so long as you stay away from motor-bikes and jet-ski hire scams.

If you want a shorter flight, consider the Canary Islands or Egypt. Morocco has a great deal to offer but might have a lot of rain at that time of year.

I would not waste time even thinking about Dubai.

Yes it's pointless going to SE Asia for a week. Once you're over the jet-lag it'll be time to return, it's a lot of money to pay for flights and a 10-13 hour flight each way when you're only there a week just isn't worth it. Save it for when you have more time (2 weeks min, pref 3-4). Canaries are a good option for a short winter holiday.

No kids for a week? I'd head straight to Las Vegas ;)

Guaranteed excellent weather, cheap as chips hotels and food, excellent night life (it's not all casinos), and amazing day trips.

Hotels and food are cheap, shows etc are expensive, getting there will be expensive, 8 hour time difference, not worth it for a week IMO. I wouldn't class stifling desert heat as "excellent weather", when we were there we tried to spend as little time outdoors in the daytime as possible!

I've done Vegas for only a week before and it's fine. However, there'll be no heat in January! I was there for New Year a couple of years ago and it was snowing. Another year it was pleasant during the day but you still needed a jumper or cardigan. Definitely not pool weather.

OPs budget would get them a decent holiday to Vegas though if they weren't bothered about sun.

Oops yes sorry - I forgot we were talking about a Jan holiday :o
  • Thanks

Must admit the more I look into it I am very much liking the idea of going to Vegas. So do people think 1 week may not be enough for Vegas? Personally (probably stupidly) I was thinking maybe could do half a week in Vegas and the other half in a stop over somewhere else in US? If we do this I guess we have to increase our number of days?

    Thanks
