I spoke to my best mate who is a sales manager for a well known DG company. Double glazing and conservatory companies go bust all the time. It's a scam to rake off as much from the creditors and tax/VATman.

He says that always get a multitude of quotes. Never sign up with one company because they are offering £x off if you sign up today. Only ethical companies will allow you time to decide. OK even salesmen who work for decent companies will want you to sign on the night but it's your money and you are in control. 95% of salesmen will call after they have given you a quote. You can use this call to negotiate. Say that XYZ Company came in at £1-2k lower.

Most companies claim to have their own installers. Even the big companies claim this. Rocking horse sheet! Most installers are sub contractors who want in/out as soon as possible. Also these installers will claim that they get penalised if they don't get payment on completion. If you are not satisfied then withhold payment - it's your money. Forget about the bleeding heart protest from the installers that they won't get paid if you don't pay. If you have 10 windows installed for £5k and one window is clearly duff then withhold £500 or more. This gives them an incentive to sort it out. The more you withhold the more leverage you have.

Unfortunately with subs wanting in/out asap you may find some problems. So after they have installed the window/door/whatever then check them. Use the locks too. If they don't open OK then ask for them to be re-adjusted. With doors make sure they close and open OK. You shouldn't need to slam them and the installers are talking rocking horse if they say that the door will bed in! One sub-contractor even installed doors and windows the wrong way with the handles on the outside!

Deposits. 10% max. None is better or a token £500 or £250. The firm should carry the risk. If you can't pay by credit card for the deposit then ask why? DG companies that don't take credit cards are often seen as a bad risk by CC companies. Some firms who do take cards will pretend that they don't. So lie and say that you're skint until payday and only have the card to pay the deposit.

It's a drag to sit through the sales BS of numerous reps but you really do need to do it. My favourite DG company in the south east has a rep who basically says: "Hello, I'm XXX from XXX. I won't bore you with the BS, so I'll measure up now and give you a price!"

  • I to am in the North West and had a conservatory fitted by planet. Well all i can say is that we have had first class service right from the start, no problems with anyone. Yes they were a few things that were needed to be put right once it was fitted but one phone call to make an appointment and everything was sorted out.
  • Well it seems that this might (at least in part) be a regional problem, as I also live in the North West and have used Planet Pvc Haydock for over 6 years.

I have had pretty good service from the suppliers, nice profile, good spec, correct measurements etc, and the only issue I have had was with poor fitting of a door on one occasion. I just refused to pay the fitter until he fixed the problem (see advice from vikingaero above).

In my personal experience of household maintenance I have seen MUCH worse than these guys but as always - look after your hard earned cash with a healthy dose of cynicism;)

  • I had my conservatory completed just before christmas (thankfully), Original completion date was October 12th.
I have been told today, by one of their "design consultants" that the company have gone onto liquidation today 08/01.
In my experience, the workmen who did my installation could not be faulted. However I cannot say the same of their admin staff, they where inefficient, unskilled and discourteous.

Since yesterdays liquidation I am in a pickle as I only have half a conservatory built. No contact from Planet so not sure what to do. Will take it up with the administrators and hope. Or I could look on the bright side and turn the concrete slab in my back garden into a giant sand pit for the kids.....urban chic style....

  • Hi, I have faulty windows - have never been right since fitted, just hope that things will work out for us but I found it very interesting to see that the company that has taken over the 'order book' is Conservatory Outley and one of their showrooms has the same address as the Planet one in Holmes Chapel. Interesting.
  • need to replace these diabolical windows - live in the south cheshire/ stoke on trent area --- but which firm do I use? any info please, thanks

EASY FIT CONSERVATORIES are up to their old tricks again and have set up another company having gone into Administration over Christmas (2009).

I would be very careful buying a Conservatory or Windows & Doors from Easy Fit Conservatories - their Guarantees are worthless as past customer are finding out!

Be very aware any potential customers of Indigo/Easyfit/Tailor Made or whatever they call themselves. This company is supposedly out of administration and chasing the customers left high and dry before Christmas. Whilst they may be offering to complete work I would not trust them as far as I could throw them. Indigo themselves underwent a management restructure earlier this year so are not a company you should trust!
  • [QUOTE EASYFIT HAVE TAKEN OVER AT SOLIHULL AND LEAMINGTON SPA AND THE MANAGER, VAL, IS EXTREMELY CUSTOMER-ORIENTED SO EASYFIT MIGHT BE WORTH CONSIDERING.[/QUOTE]:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

WHAT A JOKE! EASY FIT HAVE GONE INTO ADMINISTRATION YET AGAIN - and yes they have setup ther company for the third time selling worthless / cheap conservatories for only £2999 with a 10 year guarantee!!!

Not sure how they can offer a 10 year guarantee when the company did not last 5 years before going into administration for the third or maybe 4th time!!

STAY CLEAR OF EASY FIT CONSERVATORIES!!!:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
