Usually it is F12. Just keep your finger on that as soon as you start the machine.
This is why I wanted to 'keep it simple'. :)

    Thank you NiftyDigits,

F12 gave me boot options and the sandisk was there for usb, chose that and entered, said it was loading files (didn't see any though) and then saw the W dots but it just went to the black screen with pointer again.

Have also gone through the Memory Diagnostics Tool but that threw up no issues at all.

Thanks again for your help and advice Not sure what to do now.

Test your hardware with a Live USB OS, such as the Try Ubuntu function of Ubuntu.
Then the next stage should be to remove the HDD so that you can run chkdsk on it from another machine.
May even be time for you to replace it altogether. With 500GB from as little as £33, it won't be an expensive process.

So the problem is (probably) the HDD then? Is it easy to remove/get at? How would I know what to buy to replace it? Are they generic? If so, would the laptop run from the WD external drive which has the back ups on? Sorry too many questions!:o

I really appreciate all the time you devoted to my problem, thank you.

Time for you to consult your manual. :) Yes, it's a relatively simple job. Just a standard 2.5" drive may be needed.

No the laptop will not run from an external drive.

I have no idea as to how you made your backup, so can't advise as to how you would restore it. But don't worry about that now, as you will still have the data on the original HDD even when you take it out of the machine.
