Hmmm, I'm not sure. I'll have to have a ferret around my desk, drawers and shelves. Having lost everything once I have been religious about making back ups but I'm not sure I remember making a recovery disc. Oh no, someone is going to scream picnic at me.
I'll have to look for any discs tomorrow as not possible in the evening/night. I'll come back to you on it.
Thanks again,

Right thank you but I'm now lost!
Please would you explain in a little more detail, sorry. When I click the link I start downloading something. Should I save that onto a USB? And would I then put the USB into the lappy before powering up? Is that what you mean please? Feeling a bit dense now.:o
Thanks again I really appreciate the help.

So, download and save the image above to the Desktop and when fully downloaded and saved, pop a blank DVD disc in the drive. Then right click on the downloaded image, choose 'open with' > Windows Image Burner, place a tick in 'verify' and then click on 'Burn'.0

Once complete; refer to this
You will set your optical disc reader/writer to boot first instead of the hard drive. That will read your newly downloaded disc and allow you to run chkdsk from the DVD instead of the corrupted hard drive.0 -
Brilliant! Thank you.
I'll have to do it tomorrow now as I don't have any blank DVD discs so will need to go out and get one/some. I do have a few USB sticks though your advice seems to indicate they are not the right thing.
Thank you once again and I look forward to sorting it out tomorrow.
Thanks again,

You can also use a USB Flash drive of 4GB or over, in conjunction with the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool
Was just trying to keep it simple.0 -

Before you run the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, make sure you have already purchased the Windows 7 ISO download from Microsoft Store and have downloaded the Windows 7 ISO file to your hard drive. If you have purchased Windows 7 but have not yet downloaded the ISO file, you can download the file from your Microsoft Store Account.
To make a copy of your Windows 7 ISO file:- Click the Windows START button, and click WINDOWS 7 USB/DVD DOWNLOAD TOOL in the ALL PROGRAMS list to open the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool.
- In the SOURCE FILE box, type the name and path of your Windows 7 ISO file, or click BROWSE and select the file from the OPEN dialog box. Click NEXT.
- Select USB DEVICE to create a copy on a USB flash drive or select DVD disk to create a copy on a DVD disk.
- If you are copying the file to a USB flash drive, select your USB device in the drop-down list and click BEGIN COPYING. If you are copying the file up to a DVD, click BEGIN BURNING.

Ok, many thanks NiftyDigits, the ISO is in the process of being copied onto the usb now.
So, I'll now put the usb in the laptop, power up and follow the Comm Prompt info and so chkdsk C: /r . Is that correct?
Many thanks again for your time and help,
