There are no signs on the buses where I live saying please remain seated until the bus has stopped?? There's also plenty of standing room for passengers and on the busy routes there's loads of people standing up. That driver must have really braked hard for the poor kid to get a black eye!!

Around here one company has the signs and another one doesn't. So its definitely not universal.

MamaMoo: I agree with you about the sudden stopping - that's crap and the wrong way to bring a vehicle to a halt safely - but there are reasons why the drivers stop and talk to each other.

For example, if there are any diversions that have to be done but haven't been announced over the in-bus radio, if there's a message that needs to be passed on.

Nope, hubby said it was definitely a social thing as apparently the driver said "aww, you alright mate, haven't seen you for ages, how's it going" then proceeded to have a friendly chat about the other driver's holiday for a few seconds until my husband knocked on the Perspex screen, at which point the driver said "ah sh**, gotta go mate".

Yes but passengers should also be aware that a moving vehicle can suddenly stop thus they should have hold of an appropriate hand rail (which are there for standing customers to hold onto)

Double decker buses have either CCTV or a mirror which let's the driver know what is going on upstairs.

They were just starting to stand up, my son was perched on the edge of the seat with his hands on the rail on the back of the chair. Apparently he flew forward into the pole joining onto the rail.
Hubby says he was holding onto the rail waiting for the road to straighten out before letting our son move out into the aisle, but the driver braked so hard he lost his grip.

I think the driver should be disciplined for that, suspended for a week without pay. I also think the bus company should invite you as a family to the bus depot and apologise. The little lad will be traumatised now, and they should be doing what they can to restore his confidence. Maybe giving him a tour of the depot, photo taken sitting in the drivers seat, cake and drinks, and a weeks free bus tickets. Good customer service costs very little.

Your OH needs to complain to the bus company in writing clearly describing what treatment your 3 year old son child was given at A&E.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

To all the sanctimonious idiots telling MM it's her (or her husband's) fault because he was not sitting down, did it not occur to any of your tiny minds before you wet yourselves in your glee at being able to have a go at some poster with a problem that buses are intended to travel with passengers standing?

The number of passengers allowed to stand is stated in the vehicles licence and is usually visible on the bus.

Apart from that, bus drivers do not sit and wait for everyone to be seated before driving off (how would they know for upstairs passengers).

Drivers should, at all times, drive as if there are standing passengers and only perform a sudden stop if it absolutely unavoidable.

None of what you said is relevant in the slightest.

If it was me, as my child was injured I would have insisted on an ambulance be called and the driver contact his deport to report the incident. This way the bus would have to stay where it was until the ambulance arrived and a replacement bus for the other passengers. This would mean they would have to look into how the accident happened with statements from all the passengers on the bus.

I'd like the driver to be spoken to, and an apology really. That'd be enough for me. A week without pay this ode to
Christmas I wouldn't want, as if he has a family then they'll suffer. And all the other stuff is unnecessary too.
Just an apology and the driver being disciplined would be enough for me.

I have complained to the bus company in writing and told them that if they would like it, I have a copy of the report from the walk in centre where he was taken (by car, thankfully!) after the incident.
