I was considering getting the Capital One card, however reading the scoring criteria, I would be refused - I have not had a credit card before.
So wanting to get on to the credit card ladder and at the same time get a decent product, what would the the cards I should be looking at?
Incidently my bank (Halifax) keep offering a gauranteed acceptance of one of their cards, but I am sure it must be a poor deal...

On the Capital One topic.... my partner applied for one as he has excellent credit.
He was turned down for the card though and the reason he was given was because he shared an address with a person who did not have excellent credit! (that's me)
I don't have excellent credit but I also don't have what you would call really bad credit. Seems they are being very strict on letting people get that 4% cashback....
He has since applied for the Amercian Express one which is 5% cashback and hopefully they won't be as strict.0 -
Sorry I haven't time to read this whole thread atm but I would really appreciate a little bit of advice/guidance.
I currently have a Halifax cc which is always paid paid off in full each month. I am a little concerned though as over the previous 12 months we have spent 24k on our Halifax Credit Card but have only received £35 cash back!!
Any advice which one would be better for us to use.
Many thanks in advance.
Fiona
Sounds like one of the last few old cashback Halifax CC's you have. I think the rate was cut to something like 0.25% cashback years ago. I had one when it was 1% and ditched it when they cut it to 0.5% (probably back in 2003!)
Egg Money pays 1% cashback on all spending (up to £20k cashback spend limit annually - so £200 cashback per year), there are loads of others. Have a look at this article Martin has written about the best cashback cards:

Thanks so much Copperplate. I will read that article now and try and address this issue!

Had my Morgan Stanley Cashback card for a few month as backup to the AmEx Platinum. No adverse credit, 6 figure income, spending between £1000 and £2000 a month on it and paying off in full each month.
And now they have gone and reset my limit from 10000 to 600...
No explanation even when I called and asked, so no other option but to stop using the card and go elsewhere!
I know they have no made much money from me paying cashback and not getting payment protection or interest, but this is still very bad customer treatment ( won't call it service!).0 -

:wall: Yikes, I had no idea MS have gotten this bad under Goldfish. They have totally gone down the pan since Goldfish took them over.
Sounds like a good strategy - but don't forget to write to MS to cancel the card, otherwise it may affect your credit rating.0 -
Managed to get my mitts on the Captial One card (for fuel and travel costs). I recieved the agreement which I have signed and returned, but have since received a second agreement (the same as the first). Have they just cracked up? I'm going to give them a call anyway...
Received the credit agreement y'day... its says charge for credit is £123.65 ???
why does iy say this? It doesn't even look like an example of anything ... its just sat there on it's own!

I regret ever taking on the Morgan Stanley Platinum card which I got 9 months ago after reading the recommendation here. Over the past couple of months I have phoned them around 10 times to try to redeem my cashback and I have still not received the money. Each time the rep on the phone is very apologetic and talks to their supervisor and tells me that there is maybe an IT problem but it will definitely be sorted out by the next day. Of course, it never actually does get paid. They have taken my phone number and say they will phone me and keep me posted with the progress, but never do. They lie to me and say that they called my mobile and there was no answer, even though I have confirmed the number with them many times and have my mobile with me and switched on all of the time. I have stopped spending on the card but don't want to cancel it until I get my cashback out.
Is anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions on where I can go with this issue as I think the 'cashback' seems to have just been a trick to get me to take the card?0 -

I'm new to this, and didn't even have a credit card till recently, so am a little wary, and would appreciate some advice. I was accepted for a capital one 4% cashback card, but on the form it says there is an annual fee of £18. Is this a different card from the recommended one (it is called CApital One Primary Cashback with World Mastercard) or have the goalposts moved recently?
Thanks for any feedback0
