What to expect from Apple ( iphone 5)

Options
My iphone is days away from being a year old. Yesterday I went to work with it 100% charged. A couple of hours later I checked my phone and the screen was blank and unresponsive to button presses. I assumed I must have been mistaken and it had quickly run out of battery.

When I got home, I plugged it in but still no change. I don't think it is switched off as when I try to call the number, although the phone itself doesn't ring, I hear the ring tone before going to voicemail. If it was powered off, it would have routed straight to voicemail.

So,
1. Any ideas what the issue could be?
2. I have booked a 10 min slot at a genius bar. What can possibly be done in 10 minutes?
3.Will I have to leave the phone there and if so will I be offered a temporary phone to put my sim in and tide me over?
4. Will I just be given a new phone as it's under the year ( by 12 days!)?

I think they'll just give you a new phone unless there's some very easy software or hardware remedy. The iPhone 5 is out of production, so it will be interesting to see whether Apple replaces it with an iPhone 5 or 5S. Even if they still have warranty replacement stock of the 5, a time will come when these will run out.

I took a 5 in just last week with a similar problem, poor battery and wifi not connecting.
They connect the phone to a mac and run diagnostics, after that they give me a new 5... well a refurb 5, but you'd think it was new. I was there just over the 10 minutes....
  • Thanks. I originally posted on the techie forum before thinking this would be the correct part.
I've established that it is not the battery. Itunes can see the phone and tells me it is 95% charged and 7.0.4 available.

Still debating whether to try the suggestion or let the store do their thing

The reconditioned/refurbished iPhones are new but made with tested used parts (except the battery) taken from faulty and damaged iPhones. Given that parts have a limited lifespan and these parts have been used previously, this reduces the durability of the iPhone.

If you don't have the latest ios they will send you away to install it before they'll exchange the phone. My wife took it in first and that's what they told her.
  • Ok thanks. I don't want a wasted journey as the store is not that close. I'll attempt to download

Tell them that you can't download the latest iOS because you can't see the screen. This is a reasonable response.

Actually the consumer has two rights to a free repair - a statutory right and a contractual right. Although the contractual right (the warranty) expires after a year, the statutory right against the supplier continues for a maximum of six years depending on the nature of the goods. However, it is much less hassle to enforce the contractual right than the statutory right, so at least report it to Apple (with a case reference) before the warranty expires.
