people who get money from savings don't actually work for it
people who get money from share dividends don't actually work for it
people who live on their pension don't actually work for it
people who win the lottery don't actually work for it either
people who run a rental business may or may not work very hard depending how many properties they have and how they choose to manage them
how people use their capital it their own business and running a business that provides homes for people is very commendable0 -
Builders build houses and provide the "essentials" .
Landlords provide a service. They buy the "essential" and add their profit margin. Is that of any real value to Society?, not really as they just increase the cost of the "essential" to the end user.0 -

I would doubt that many houses would be built unless there were people willing to buy them.
So yes, an absolutely essential service to society to enable people to have homes who for whatever reason don't own.0 -
