    that's my worry, what next?

closely observe how everyone else behaves and try to obediently follow suit, expect to be pulled back into line should you ever be a naughty tenant and do something outrageous like having friends round for a coffee, and spend all your time worrying about what complaint or instruction is coming..... and being always being reminded it's not your home..... well that's what it was like for me.

I have one of these. Terraced house, space at front to put them.

Maybe OP you should get your LL to buy one!

They are not cheap, and not sure if available in UK, but all neighbours on our terrace now have them, in various stats of embellishment with. Climbers in pots at the base etc. Very easy on the eye!

Do not get into the power struggle thing. It's not worth it. Just compromise, and let the complainers have their day. It takes far too much energy to fight silly things like this.

    Choose your battles!
  • my temptation with this one is to leave things parked exactly where they are for now. we are breaking no laws etc.

with regards to the bins, if the view they obscured was the hanging garden of Babylon, id understand. but it isn't. if the view was herds of wildebeest migrating across the Serengeti, id understand. but it isn't. if the view it obscured was the Swedish womens beach volleyball training camp id understand, but sadly it isn't. the view is my gas and electricity meter cupboards, which in all their white glory brighten and adorn the otherwise boring brickwork, and are clearly significantly better than the wheelie bins, which in their green, blue and brown are clearly an unacceptable clash. torn between complying for an easy life, or fighting it. my big worry is what next? the colour of my curtains? the smell of our cooking?

LOL have you no shame? You've sucked every last drop out of this thread.

Time to let sleeping bins lie don't you think? Gawd.

If the bins were blocking access for other people, on public land, on their sides with rubbish spewing out, or blocking an otherwise beautiful view then I would say yes.

Putting then at the side of the house next to meter boxes, nope.

But this is most likely the start of many other demands ...

I agree with this. There will be more and more demands.

People have said pick your battles but the moaning neighbour seems to have decided to start one with you anyway without being reasonable so it won't stop at this.

It's your bin and your home. You are happy with where it is so leave it there. I don't understand what some people have against bins, as long as the lids are shut then what is the problem? Surely it makes sense to keep them where it's convenient to the bin owner and the bin men?

on a serious note, does anyone think the landlord/neighbour is being fair/reasonable?

Totally unreasonable - while you are renting the property it's your home, therefore you can keep anything you like where you like provided its not causing damage, an obstruction or other safety issue. Likewise where you choose to park your cars.

If the person making the complaints hasn't even got the "round objects" to approach you directly then their complaint should be filed in, ah, one of the wheelie bins ;)
  • thanks for the reassurances. my dilemma is if I stick to my guns the landlady may find it too much, and either sell the house/end our tenancy over it. I don't want to chance that happening. nor do I want her to have the stress/worry, she is an elderly lady in her 80s who doesn't deserve the aggrovation

to be honest if an issue such as the perfectly reasonable placement of the bins causes her that much stress, then she isn't best suited to being a landlady...

a valid point, but I wouldn't wish the stress on her and as a tenant/decent person I will do anything I reasonably can to help her

I completely agree, but also you need to remember you are a normal law abiding tenant who is doing nothing that could be reasonably considered wrong.

Living your life by what is considered appropriate behaviour for an 80yr old and her equally elderly friends may become tiring and constricting very quickly ;)
