You can install the 2014 version for free on a trial basis. It will run and update for a month before you need to enter the licence key.
KIS 2014 is free with Barclays online banking BTW.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

i followed earthstorms advice, when i tried to download the 30 day version it would not install telling me error 5.
when i eventuallydownloaded the 30 day free it tells me trial version expired ( have never before downloaded a free version) i did have kaspersky 2012 which i used the removal tool to delete this morning as its expired.
so i tried to enter the activation number it tells me 'the licence does not belong to this application'
thanks macman but i dont use barclays bank, but good advice for anyone that does

I suggest you contact Kaspersky support as the trial should install and allow you to use it for the 30 days. the removal tool may not have removed all kaspersky files.

That's the issue, you should alway use removal tools as you can mess up with manually removing.

if you still have KIS 2012 reinstall that and then just order a cheap 2013 from ebay and just use the activation code

No need to order another 2013 copy.

The OP could have simply used the code on the KIS 2012 to test and then moved to the upgrade.
Trying to install KIS 2009 probably didn't help. There may be items left in the Registry.

Do you still have 2011 or 2012? See if you can reinstall and then use the activation code. Then run the upgrade.

I think the OP didn't remember to read the initial instruction. :)
The KIS 2012 code wont work if its expired, but yes i agree still items in registry thats why the removal tool should be used.

I have used Kaspersky since 2000. Kaspersky changed the whole KIS layout from version 2013.

yes pure is better than KIS as long as you dont upgrade to Windows 8
