Laptop with solitaire game on?

Can anyone help. I've got an elderly neighbour in her late 70's who needs a new laptop and she's asked me to help her as she doesn't know what to buy and to be honest though I'd like to help I've always had desktops so not sure what to advise her, I also don't play games on mine which is one of the main things she likes on hers. I'm talking things like card games, nothing that needs fancy graphics etc.

The one she's currently got is a Packard Bell but she's had a lot of problems with it and now they say it's not worth fixing again, so she adamant she doesn't want the same make. She uses it for photos and music, internet and most importantly to her is that she can play solitaire on it. Now this is a game that came pre loaded on the computer so not sure a new one would have it on, am I right in telling her that she'd be able to get a solitaire game to put on if she got one that didn't have it pre installed?

Finally what brands would anyone suggest are best for reliability. I've got a HP desktop I've been very happy with but no idea what they are like in laptops. I've had a look but half the names I don't know, and there are many different brands now, half of which I've never heard of.

Thanks.

If she has a Windows laptop, she should be able to get solitaire http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solitaire_(Windows)

I did wonder whether a tablet might be good for her though? - games like that would be easy to tap on a touchscreen.

I think it's just the computers got old, she's had a new battery for it and took it in to be looked at a few times but it still keeps crashing on her.

Thanks Tyllwyd, I suggested a tablet and gave her mine to try but she said she didn't like it, plus of course she'd prefer one with a disk drive so she can put her music cd's on. I think she wants something she's used too, I've got a feeling that windows eight is going to be a bit of a shock and learning curve but they all seem to come with that now.

  • I'm 24 and Windows 8 was a bit of a learning curve for me! Try to get Windows 7 if you can because it's so VASTLY different! It's only intuitive if you're used to touch screen layouts.

It would be useful to see if you can find out what is wrong with her current one though I we can prevent it from happening in the future. For example if you want to preserve battery life make sure you don't sit with t on garge constantly.

If you want to save her wasting £300+, backup, reinstall windows, follow the speedup sticky, or post more details of the crashing

Hardware rarely goes wrong, even if old, almost all "crashes" are software problems. Battery is a consumable, and not essential for a machine to work

I lost Solitaire on my Vista lappy and the only way to get it back was to reinstall Vista.
  • get her a pack of cards, much cheaper and 100% reliable!
