Best baby travel system if money was no object?

Options
Hi everyone apologies if this has been done already, have had a search and everything I've found is a little out of date.

Basically, my boyfriends parents have told us they are going to buy us our buggy for our baby which is due in May, and they've told us we can spend as much as we need. They've said they want to buy us this ridiculously expensive (2k) designer one but it's just not practical for me - it's one of those carriage style things and I can just imagine me breaking it within half an hour!

I wanted to ask for advice: if money was no object, what are the best travel systems out there and what would you choose?

Our requirements are as follows:

- not fussed about what it looks like
- must be easy to fold up as well as fit into the boot of our Polo
- must be easy to steer and not too heavy (I'm quite small!)
- would want a baby car seat, plus the bassinet thingy and whatever else we can get as part of a package really
- we want it to be isofix compatible as this seems the best way of putting it into the car
- I really want one with a decent amount of storage for going out during the day on my own (i.e. So I can put the baby changing bag and a couple of bags of shopping underneath the buggy)
- ideally we want one that is adaptable into a bigger buggy so we can use it for as long as we can

Thanks all in advance for your help! I googled but it's like a minefield out there!! We are first time parents and totally clueless!!

  • I have a Uppababy Vista with a Maxi Cosi car seat. It pretty much ticks all your boxes. I've been extremely pleased with it, it'll last us a while yet and my son is nearly one. I particularly love the large storage basket.

  • Thanks so much that actually sounds perfect! Have written it at the top of my list!!

Hopefully going to go to kiddicare and try out all the buggies we find that meet our requirements and then decide!

    Thank you :)

The mamas and papas urbo was the only one that would fit into the boot of my peugeot 207 without taking wheels off.

  • Thanks vic3! I will check that one out! Do you find it easy to use as well? It's so strange isn't it, you would have thought they would make buggies better fold-upable these days!!!

I'm hoping whichever we look at in Kiddicare (or wherever we look) they might be able to take the buggy out to our car and see if it fits in the boot before we buy. I would really hate to have to faff around with taking the wheels off with my baby in tow everytime I got into the car!

I have the Uppababy Cruz which also ticks all of your boxes. You have to buy the carry cot and car seat adapters separately, unlike with the vista, but it works out the same price. It is slightly lighter than the vista and IMO the basket is better as it doesn't have a bar running across it. I wouldn't recommend it if you want to do lots of off road walking, but it is fine for the park and most paths.

Kiddicare don't have uppababy as far as I'm aware, but you can find it in John Lewis and you can order a number of different colours from the John lewis website.

They're all very similar, you're just going to have to try them out and decide which one is best for you and your circumstances and where you plan on going with it. :)

We've gone for the Babystyle Oyster which is light, easy to use and has colour packs so you can change the colour as and when you feel like it. Baby is due in February so can't really comment on how good it is so far apart from playing around with it at home, but we bought it on the recommendation of several friends who say that it's brilliant! :)

  • I have the Bugaboo Chameleon, which is brill but top of the price range.
It's very nice to push and has great suspension. My son and now my baby daughter sleep really well in the carrycot.

It is a bit big and cumbersome, and I tend to think it's better for those who will be doing a lot of walking with the buggy as loading it in and out of the car can be a bit of a hassle.

I also have the maxi cosy car seat which drops onto the BB base easily.

The resale value of the Bugaboo is good too, so as long as it isn't trashed, they sell very well second hand on eBay.

What might suit you in the early days might not suit you later on as well so don't go too nuts since lots of people end up with stroller type things after about 6 months, or what I have which is a walking pushchair and a one in the car for popping out to the shops. What I initially bought and what I ended up being happiest with changed - I didn't bother much with the whole carrycot option I was desperate to have, infant carrier carseats for too heavy for me too fast and we swapped to one that stays in the car - and the weight which I hadn't fussed too much about became a real factor when we lost our local bus service and I had to go up a really big hill.

I now have a single cheapie stroller for when I have one kid with me, a double stroller that lives in the car and a double Nipper for walking more which is so light to push with two hefty kids in and manageable one handed while carrying a toddler across a road that I'm going to buy the single version of it soon now I'm back using a single buggy much more these days.

Not the biggest basket in the world but ticks all your other boxes. I loved mine!. I used one of these for extra bags.

  • Thanks all. I had heard the bugaboo cameleon was ridiculously heavy so that's what put me off, otherwise it ticks all the boxes.

In terms of the oyster I think that was the one I had looked at but the storage underneath is very small (might be getting mixed up with another though!) so that's what put me off of that one.

Dizziblonde - that's kind of why I'm doing so much research now, because my OH's mum and dad are going to end up spending a fortune on the buggy however much we argue (and believe me I've tried) so we DO in fact want to buy one which is going to last longer than just 6 months - 1 year. I don't tend to use buses and drive anywhere so I can't see our circumstances changing so much that we would need a completely different buggy. We really do want one now that ticks all the boxes and will last - which is why I do feel a bit lucky that we've got an unlimited budget on this. But thanks for your advice anyway :) and totally agree with what you say about the weight of the buggy - I am tiny so that's why I need a light one, so I don't end up 6 months down the line having to buy a lighter one etc.
