I already checked and I can't overpay, the only thing I can do is save up alongside once the credit cards are paid off to try and settle the loan quicker. I'll have to wait and see what options are there for me in a year or two to maybe move lenders or refinance it so I can save more each month.

The snowball calculator didn't overpay on the loan either.

Take a look on the Up Your Income board - there are loads of ideas in there - from simple things such as doing surveys and mystery shopping through to more advanced things that might make use of any skills/interests that you have.

If this is a new personal loan just taken out then you will be able to overpay it, and if it is the only debt incurring interest then it may well be sensible to do so.

Regarding earning extra money to increase your income, this if often harder than reducing outgoings but maybe have a look at the up your income forum for some ideas - Up Your Income

Also you may get some ideas from the make £10 a day monthly thread - ~November 2013 Make £10 a day challenge ~ everybody most welcome to join

I would suggest you don't carry any CCs around and use cash to pay for everything. You need to start looking at money as money not something pulled out of thin air.

If you physically spent that all on the slot machines then I wouldn't think you will be in this big a debt.

The hardest part for you will be to start spending again once the debt has decreased significantly. You seem to lack will power, you will need your husband on board to overcome this. Yes, he will be extremely angry with you, but he obviously loves you very much to stand by you over these years.

Don't forget you are about to embark on a 4 year frugal journey. If everything goes to plan, you will be debt free. It is easy to say I will do this and that but doing it for real is difficult. That is why you need all the support you can get.

    Good luck !

Thank you, yes if I'm honest I'm more concerned about my shopping habit wearing its head that the gambling, shopping has been a problem for 14 years so this is a serious problem for me. I'm not belittling the gambling problem at all but it's not a rooted in me to so this as it is to compulsive buying!

Of the £45k £15k is gambling, the rest is previous debt for shopping and additional shopping debt, of the 2 I think the shopping is the bigger problem.

My husband is one in a million and I'm very lucky to have him.
  • Hi I couldn't read and go...
I know what a Gambling addiction can do I lost $750 when I was in Australia, this was my living money for a couple of weeks when I was out there just on slot machines in the back of a pub in one night.
All I can say is now you have had your LBM with Gambling it will be hard but it will get better. Just try and move yourself away from the temptation. I stopped drawing out cash and using my card for everything as then I didn't have anything in my pocket to put into the machine. I suppose with the internet gaming to do the opposite don't have a card only use cash for things. Don't find out the details which would mean you could use it to log into sites.

    Good Luck
Thanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada
