If so Series Landy every time, though I assure you it WILL be very slow and uncomfortable. However, £100 to insure it and maybe it'll be tax exempt equals happy days in my book.

I love the old Series motors, but at that price you'll be lucky to get one that isn't a noisy rust bucket. They can be seriously cold in the winter, even the S3's with the better heater, unless it has a truck cab or fume curtain. And you're looking at sub 20mpg if it's got a standard engine & gearbox.

Couple that with poor passenger safety, ancient braking systems that are really just dangerous in slippery conditions and all in all, they're not a great motor for day to day use. I sold my rebuilt S2 a couple of years ago for those reasons. The market price for that, which had a new chassis & bulkhead (plus other bits) was over £3, 000.

Its getting to that time, great for buying a convertible not so for a winter toy.

However here is a leggy Forester on pistonheads for £1295, and loads on Gumtree in budget.

No more help from me you evil car influencing man, I have just arranged to view an S Turbo in York!

I've been looking for the past month or so, bought a V70 T5 - just because it was a V70 T5 and it turned out to be a shed.
Problem with the Gumtree ones is the distance. I don't want to travel too far as it just whacks up the cost, especially if I have to look at a few before buying.

Think I remember seeing a decent looking Tubby in York on eBay... Was pretty close to buying a none turbo from a breakers in Liverpool but it needed taxing. Price was fine but they didn't reply when i messaged them asking if they'd be able to hold on to it if i paid a deposit - didn't want to buy it mid month and have to back tax it.... heard nothing back from them and the classified ad ran out and wasn't re-listed..

Why does it need to be something in the 4x4 style like a Vitara?

If you can find one get a Subaru Justy 4x4.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

I spotted that yesterday. Think i messaged asking how long the T&T was... T&T till 2014 doesn't say much

Justy looks too small for tip runs and paving slabs. If I can't find a decent 4x4 at the right price I'll be looking for an estate...

I can appreciate that, I have seen a number of cars that are ideal, but located somewhere like aberdeen or dorset.

Luckily the cars I like and can afford are not that rare I need to travel hundreds of miles to buy although I do have a hankering to buy a classic bmw or merc in germany and drive it home.

Just looking on eBay and there's quite a few Toyota Hilux's on there in your pirce range. Might be worth having a look at as they fill your criteria.

Looking at Hilux's the nearest under a grand at £1600 BIN. 85miles on auction and 175miles at BIN under a grand (I'm in Lancashire)
  • Given what Top Gear did to a Hilux, I'd imagine they're a pretty good buy.
