Problem with new Router?

When I spoke to AOL last weekend regarding wifi for my new telephone the Lady told me that I was using an old Router (NETGEAR). She said she would send me a new one and it would be free. The new one is AOL Broadband AOLBB-AA3918 HUAWEI ECHOLIFE HG532
Today before I tried to set it up I called to ask what I should do. Told to simply take the cables out of the netgear and plug them into the new Router. I did this but could not get online and I then noted that it was the Internet had a orange light the rest being green. On the Router there are ADSL .Power the yellow Lan and there are 4.
BUT where the new router instead of 3 links there is another USB connection.
I called AOL and after doing the 192.168.1.1 whilst I was holding on and the person seemed not to be able to work things out as this page would not open.
The line went dead and I suspect he hung up? Not sure but I wonder What I have now done is just reconnect the Netgear Router and all is in working order,
2-3 years ago they send me another Router which I didn't ever connect
I
It is THOMSON ST 585v6 SPEEDTOUCH It looks like it has only the same plugs in as the NETGEAR
I says on/off button Reset 4 yellow Ethernet and then DSL
My question is do the newer Routers increase the speed as mine is a bit sluggish at times.
Should I try setting up the new router again NOT TODAY I am working in a very confined space so not easy for me.
The CD that came with the broadband when I put it in would not go when next was clicked
The 2nd question should I try setting up the Thomson one.
Really if a new Router would make my computer internet speed increase then I would be keen to get it functional I know some things have a USB cable and I had to use this to set up my wireless printer but then I unplugged it I think?
Once again it is back to you very helpful on these forums I would appreciate it .
Thanks
Sue

I cannot imagine what would possess anyone to be with AOL still tbh!Friendly greeting!0

Have you plugged an Ethernet lead from the router to your PC for the initial setup or are you doing it wirelessly?0

There is a username and password page in the routers settings.
your phone number used to be the settings.
Google the name but it used to be phonenumber@dialbb.com
password ??
They should provide this, But you need to get past the muppets first.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Thanks for the help . I am going to leave it for tonight, Would the new Router increase the speed on my Computer,
As for AOL I have been with them since I first got my desktop in 2004 I have never had any problem with them, Maybe they are very keen to retain customers but the offer me a better deal every time I need to ask anything
I am paying £3 60 a month and this is for
1 Broadband
2 All telephone calls local national and International calls.
For this amount I could not do better. I call my Brothers in the US and Australia and in fact if they call me I tell them let me call them back
3 I pay my line rental to them and I decided to pay 12 months rental which also brought the cost down.
As I personally have never had a problem I see no reason to change.
Again thanks to all and I will follow your advice.

You are not with AOL you are with TalkTalk. They bought AOL's UK broadband back in around 2009. AOL UK is just a brand of TT.
Yes, a new router may well increase speeds if you are using a very old router of 2004 vintage (which model of Netgear is it-there are hundreds)?
Don't try to set it up wirelessly at first. Set it up using ethernet. When it's working, then set up the wireless side.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I realise that AOL is now talktalk but everything that I have bills etc or mailing email etc says AOL
This would be the router they gave me when it changed to Broadband Initially I had the one which used your phone.
I will try and work our things as you have explained When I bought a wireless printer some time ago I had to connect firist and then when it was running I removed the USB (think) it was called.
This cable you are talking of will this be ibn the back of the desk top and already plugged in or do I need to buy an extra cable.
Thank you all I would be very happy to connect if it did incresse the speed, Will have a go tomorrow

I assume that you are trying to set this up via a network cable and not wirelessly ?
If the latter - try using a cable first.....0
